Board Member - Green Works in Kansas City
About Green Works: At Green Works in Kansas City we put everything we are into everything we do to serve motivated young people living in the urban neighborhoods served by Kansas City Public Schools. We are an 11-year old organization committed to providing high-quality educational and workforce opportunities. Through an environmental education platform, we teach students about the environment and involve them in meaningful service projects. In our Excelerate program, we provide career exploration, teach job and life skills, and offer financial literacy training, all to prepare students for summer internships and life after high school.
 
Type of Organization:  Human Services – Education and Workforce Development
 
We are looking for someone with expertise in: We are looking for individuals with connections and experience in the areas of Marketing Communications, Fund Development and Risk Management. Over the next several years we are focusing on increasing individual donors, increasing our visibility, and launching an annual special event.  
 
Desired industry affiliations or community connections: Marketing and Fund Development professionals and groups, and general business connections including Chambers of Commerce.
 
What is the designated term for board service? Initial one-year term, followed by up to three, three-year terms.
 
How often does your board meet? Six times a year, from 4:30 – 6 p.m. on a weekday.
 
What personal or financial contribution is expected of each board member? All board members are required to make a financial contribution each year to Green Works at a level that is meaningful to them. 
 
Any additional board expectations: We are looking for board members who understand the community we serve and care about helping urban youth. We strive to uphold our environmental values in all aspects of our work, so we are looking for people who share those values and understand that commitment. We want board members who are team players, work well with others, listen well, and are thoughtful and kind.
 
We expect board members to attend at least two student events each year, to be actively involved in helping our executive director raise money including soliciting both cash and in-kind contributions, and to serve as a member of one of our committees. (Committee work is done over email whenever possible to minimize additional meeting time.) Board members are also expected to attend any fundraising events hosted by Green Works.
 
In particular:
  • Our board chair has experience with golf tournaments and has offered to host a tournament for Green Works. Could you assist with this effort?
  • We need to increase our individual donations. Do you have experience with donor events and campaigns, and would you be willing to work with our executive director and staff to assist with this effort?
  • We are creating a marketing plan this summer to increase our organization’s visibility with key stakeholders. Would you be willing to help train the board, staff and current supporters on how to engage with our social media efforts to amplify our reach and strengthen our brand?
  • We are focused on running an efficient and professional organization which includes managing our risk exposure. Would you be willing to help our board review our current insurance and our policies and procedures to ensure we are reasonably protected?
