Artistic Director- Take the Stage Outreach Program of Owen/Cox Dance Group

Title:  Take the Stage Artistic Director

Reports to: Artistic Director

Supervises: Take the Stage staff, Owen/Cox Dance Group Operations Manager

Status:    Full-time Exempt    


Take the Stage Mission:

Take the Stage is a high-energy, in-school dance residency program designed to uplift and inspire youth to excellence. Through a positive and dynamic experience in the arts we provide children the opportunity to discover the tools necessary to become successful in academics and in life.


Purpose of Residency Director:

This position oversees all artistic and administrative aspects of the Take the Stage program, and carries out the mission of the organization with excellence.  The Take the Stage Artistic Director is responsible for carrying out the mission and the policies of the Take the Stage program, and is a member of Owen/Cox Dance Group’s Artistic Staff.


Primary Responsibilities:

Artistic Program Oversight

  • Oversees Take the Stage staff, providing direction, mentoring and conducting performance evaluations, and running monthly program staff meetings 

  • Oversees all programming, scheduling, curriculum, choreography, and performances for the Take the Stage Program and teamEXCEL

  • Participates in annual planning including reviewing evaluation of program, and incorporating recommendations to ensure alignment of program with organization’s mission and strategic objectives.

  • Oversee communication and contracting with TTS Partner Schools

  • Keep Pace with and Apply Curriculum Standards for MO and KS in TTS Residencies 

  • Schedule and Attend all December (and Spring) Assemblies 


Directing, Teaching, and Choreography

  • Directs the Take the Stage End-of-Year-Event (*see detailed list below)

  • Teaches, choreographs in, and directs advanced teams (teamEXCEL)

  • Teach at TTS partner schools


Administration and Fiscal Oversight

  • Oversees and executes administrative aspects for the Program, including scheduling, meetings with schools, volunteers, and event production.

  • Provide reports to the Owen/Cox Dance Group board for monthly Board meetings and as needed

  • Participates in the creation of annual Program budgets in conjunction with the Owen/Cox Dance Group Artistic Director and Treasurer.

  • Execute TeamEXCEL! Rehearsal Venue Contract

  • Responsible for the fiscal management, reporting, and reconciling of Program budgets with Accountants and Operations Manager.

  • Oversee Invoicing--Billing for School Fees 

  • Review & Execute Monthly Payroll 

  • Oversee Grant writing and filing Grant Reports

  • Generate Personal Thank You Notes to major donors at Year’s End.


General Duties:

  • Compiles reports as requested for committee and Board meetings

  • Upholds all Management and HR policies and procedures

  • Oversee Marketing/PR (social media, website, press releases, printed materials, video)

  • Oversee Purchase of Liability Insurance

  • Maintain Communication with Associates of National Dance Institute

  • Attend OCDG Events

  • Co-Lead the TTS Board Committee

  • Cultivate New ‘Friends’ in the KC Community 

  • Attend Non-Profit Connect and Arts KC Events & more to learn strategies and network.


Working Conditions, Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Functions performed in a variety of environments including: Owen/Cox Dance Group office, schools, performance sites, and other locations

  • Requires reimbursable in-state travel to Take the Stage locations, participating schools, residency sites, and community events  

  • Requires weekend and evening hours.

  • Requires extensive physical movement, dance, high energy, and stamina


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: 

Job Specific Requirements:  

  • Professional performance experience preferred

  • College level education preferred

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in job-related duties - experience organizing, directing, and choreographing for performances

  • Experience in grant writing

  • Flexibility in work schedule

  • Public speaking experience

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent organizational skills
