Youth Advocate - Art

The Mattie Rhodes Center provides a holistic approach to individual and family well-being through social services, mental health counseling and the arts.  Our staff provides culturally competent programming in the following four areas:
• Family Services (behavioral health, family violence, substance abuse)
• Youth Services (in-school intervention, youth development, supportive living)
• Community Support (health and wellness, community engagement)
• Cultural Arts (arts education, exhibits and collections)
 
Mattie Rhodes is the only fully bilingual/bicultural state-certified behavioral health care provider in the Greater Kansas City region, and is state-certified in intensive outpatient substance abuse therapy.
 
Mattie Rhodes is nationally accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA) and began serving the community in 1894.
 
Job Summary:
The Youth Advocate-Arts is responsible for implementing effective, quality youth development programming within the EXPLORE after-school Youth Arts programming (includes activities such as Cultural Journeys, Expeditions, Visual Voyages, etc.) and assisting in integrating grant regulations/standards into program activities. The Youth Advocate will provide youth supervision in/out of school programs and scheduled classes/workshops located at Mattie Rhodes Center or off-site as applicable. While the Youth Advocate will primarily deliver arts integrated youth development programming, the position may also support additional youth development, agency, or community-based events. This position is a part-time, non-exempt position. The responsibilities of this position require a flexible work schedule
 
PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION & ENGAGEMENT
Implements and supports the innovation of quality programs and services for youth of all ages.

  • Assists the Youth Development Coordinator or site based supervisor in the delivery of program activities guided by the standards set forth by the Council on Accreditation (COA) and the agency.
  • Responsible for following program structure and contributing ideas to the agency’s Youth Development resources, including curriculum development and program design.
  • Responsible for assisting with parent and community engagement components of programs through relationship building, activity facilitation, and educational/informational material creation and disbursement.
  • Addresses safety and behavior concerns with each student or participant as dictated by Mattie Rhodes Center behavior support and management policy.
  • Maintain positive, professional relationships with program partners.
 
PROGRAM SUPPORT & PROMOTION
  • Responsible for providing support in the implementation of other Mattie Rhodes Center youth/family related endeavors, activities, and events.  
  • Responsible for collecting registration, tracking attendance, sign-in procedures and implementation of program assessments and keeping this information up to date for reporting.
  • Participate in supervision and team meetings as required.
 
Qualifications:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree (BA, BFA) or equivalent.
  • Experience working with school-age children and young adults in out-of-school time or other teaching environments. Creativity, flexibility and strong character values necessary.
  • Passion for youth development, urban education and art.
  • Experience in a family service agency working with diverse urban populations.
  • Ability to demonstrate patience and compassion in working with youth
  • Ability to prioritize and think clearly in crisis situations.
  • Excellent organization, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Flexibility and the ability to work independently and cooperate well in groups
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, access to reliable transportation to program sites, clean driving record
 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two years or more of experience within a not for profit agency completing duties similar to those outlined.
  • Computer Literate, Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Bilingual (Spanish)
$13.00 per hour/20 hours per week
