Development Director

Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
A senior level position on the leadership team, reporting to the Executive Director, the Development Director must embrace the mission of RS and lead the development team as well as solicit middle and major donors. This position is responsible for leading the agency in growing resources by developing strategies to increase annual revenue from individual donors, foundations and corporations. Responsibilities will include the research, outreach, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual middle and major donors and overseeing the development team including the Communications and Grants Manager, Development Officer, Events Committee and Volunteer Manager. Additionally, the Development Director will collaborate with the Executive Director on other development initiatives as assigned.
 
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Donor Cultivation & Outreach  
Direct the annual campaign and manage the Development team to:
  • Grow a major gifts program including identification, cultivation and solicitation of major donors. This includes personally identifying and proactively securing 4-6+ current or prospective major donor visits per week on average, at their homes, offices and events in the community.
  • Develop strategies to identify, cultivate and solicit donors into the RS monthly giving program. 
  • Research and create a pipeline of prospective major donors 
  • Serve as a liaison between donors and agency leadership to ensure individuals develop a meaningful relationship with the organization 
  • Work to diversify the portfolio of supporters, including current donors, high net worth contributors, board members and others 
  • Lead the RS Development team in engaging new and current donors through annual events, volunteer engagement, development activities, workshops, etc.
  • Maintain an accurate Salesforce donor database with donor information and generate regular activity reports and board reports 
  • Develop and coordinate with the Development Team one annual large scale fundraiser and several smaller fundraisers per year in homes and small venues
  • Create and implement recognition programs for individual and corporate donors and RS volunteers.
  • Maintain ongoing communications with private and corporate donors
 
Grants and Communications
Manage the Communications and Grants Manager to:
  • Oversee and manage the Grants Manager and grant writing process including research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements.
  • Work with Director of Finance and Director of Programs & Operations to ensure timely and accurate report deliveries to all funders.
  • Ensure grants management systems and project management tools are up to date and effectively deployed
  •  Lead the Development team to create high quality donor communications and collateral materials.
  • Develop and work with Development team to fulfill donor benefits, gift recognition, correspondences and mailings including direct mail
  • Oversee all organizational communications and manage the Communications Manager to write and execute an annual communications campaign to support agency funding and audience engagement targets.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization as needed
 
ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT LEADERSHIP DUTIES
  • Plan and evaluate fundraising campaigns and activities
  • Develop high quality reports for the Executive Director and Board of Directors
  • Recruit and train fundraising staff and volunteer leaders
  • Assist the Executive Director in engaging current board members and developing an emerging leaders and advisory board members
  • Build a planned giving program with a focus on deferred gifts such as bequest
  • Solicit and manage In-kind donation opportunities
  •  Perform annual staff reviews with direct reports
  • Other duties as assigned
 
EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Five or more years of relevant nonprofit fundraising experience is preferred
  • Foundation relationship and grant management experience preferred
  • Familiarity with Salesforce or equivalent donor management system
  • Possess very strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and have the ability to present in front of a group with ease
  • Knowledge of broad themes and current trends in fundraising along with self-motivation, initiative and reliability are essential. Demonstrate professional conduct at all times.
  • Basic office skills, record keeping, and strong organization skills are a must.
  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in nonprofit fundraising, management, business, or communications with strong interest in fundraising/sales and working for a nonprofit organization are preferred.

Previous experience will demonstrate a proven track record in identifying and securing new funding opportunities, and leading and managing fundraising teams. Should possess excellent writing and computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, Salesforce-/database management, etc.) Should also be well-versed in electronic communications.
