Development Manager

Sunflower House is a Child Advocacy Center serving Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. Our mission is to protect children from physical and sexual abuse through education, advocacy, forensic and mental health services. 

POSITION TITLE–Development Manager

REPORTS TO–Resource Development Director

STATUS–Full-time | Exempt 


Identifies and engages corporate sponsors and partners, individual donors, and agency volunteers to raise philanthropic support to advance the mission of Sunflower House. The Development Manager serves as the primary fundraiser and manager for all Sunflower House and third-party events. They will manage and support the Friends of Sunflower House volunteer group and volunteer programs.


Event Management

  • Manage all aspects of Sunflower House signature events, including the Circle of Safety Breakfast, Pumpkin Palooza, and the Annual Valentine Gala. 

    • Identify and secure event sponsors, attendees, donors, and table hosts to reach or exceed revenue goals as appropriate for each event. 

    • Recruit and manage all event volunteers.

    • Recruit and engage event Chairs and manage event committees.

    • Manage all event logistics: Location, vendors, auction items, entertainment, food, etc.

  • Maintain accurate and thorough paperwork and financial documentation for all events, including current contact information; accurately record event sponsorship details; manage event budgets and sponsor invoicing and payment; update sponsor and donor giving history.

  • Provide timely and accurate reports to the Development Director, CEO, and Board on event budgets, silent and live auctions, sponsorships, etc. 

  • Support third-party events and outreach: attend third-party events and recruit and manage volunteers as needed—coordinate attendance for Development Director, CEO, and other agency staff and volunteers. 

  • Work closely with the Development Coordinator to ensure timely and accurate donor and sponsor records and acknowledgments, event communications, and proper sponsor recognition. 

  • Works closely with the Resource Development Director to identify, engage, and build relationships with corporate and individual donors at each giving level. 

Volunteer Management and Community Outreach

  • Manage Friends of Sunflower House: ensure consistent communications, meeting schedules, support and guidance. Coordinate Friends communications and marketing with the development coordinator, Friends President, and Sunflower House staff. Assist with recruitment and engagement of new Friends members.

  • Recruit and manage Family Care and Community Service volunteers to assist Sunflower House programs and fund development efforts.

  • Work with agency staff members to assess volunteer needs and schedule volunteers for ongoing shifts. 

  • Primary contact for community outreach events: booths, fairs, etc. Coordinate, attend and recruit volunteers when needed. Schedule Development Director, CEO, or other staff and Board as required. 

  • Increase the number of agency and Friends volunteers; improve engagement and retention efforts.

  • Conduct background checks and reference checks for volunteers as required.

  • Manage the volunteer database, and track and record all volunteer hours.

Additional Expectations

The successful candidate will: 

  • Possess an outgoing, personable demeanor and the ability to effectively engage volunteers, event chairs, and sponsors in executing events and Sunflower House initiatives. 

  • Be creative in developing event themes and campaigns and motivate volunteer fundraisers, volunteers, and sponsors. 

  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication, including proofreading, creative copywriting, and attention to detail. 

  • Be a collaborative problem-solver and self-starter with the ability to work independently and within a team environment. 

  • Attend all agency functions, special events, donor and volunteer events, and meetings.


Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, nonprofit management, or related field with a minimum of three years’ experience in special events management, volunteer management, fundraising/development, or communications. Candidate must demonstrate success in event management and securing sponsors. Must be a strong leader who can handle multiple projects confidently and efficiently. Excellent writing, verbal, and organizational skills. Attention to detail, timely follow-up, and comfort in managing event budgets are essential for success in this position. 

Must possess the ability to communicate with people from all backgrounds and feel at home in both corporate and nonprofit settings. Ability to build long-term relationships on behalf of Sunflower House with staff, Board, individual donors, volunteers, and corporate sponsors. Able to work independently or in a team environment.
