Development Professional, KU Cancer Center*

Location: KU Endowment is open to discussing the office location that best meets the needs of both the candidate as well as the organization. Available locations for this position are in Lawrence and Kansas City. In addition, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule after initial training and satisfactory job performance.

What we are looking for:
Full-time professional fundraising position responsible for raising major gifts for The Kansas University Endowment Association in support of The University of Kansas Cancer Center.  Works closely with a team of individuals charged with fundraising for cancer that includes the Senior Director of Development-Team Lead, the AVP for Medical Development as well as various staff associated with the KU Cancer Center and the University of Kansas Health System.
The Development Professional will also be responsible for initiating pipeline-building strategies to support the fundraising priorities of the KU Cancer Center, enhancing leadership-level annual giving through personal visits and cultivation activities.
The individual in this position is expected to embrace KU Endowment’s stated core values – passion for KU, partnership with donors, perpetual support for KU, and a people-centered approach – and demonstrate support for them through professional interactions and activities.
*NOTE:  This position will be filled at the level commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications.
What you’ll be doing:

  • Actively engage in a comprehensive fundraising program for the KU Cancer Center, focusing on major gifts ($25,000+), from individuals, foundations, corporations, service organizations, and other financially capable potential donors, as well as leadership annual giving.
  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospects and donors for gifts.   Involve Cancer Center physicians and staff in donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities, as appropriate.
  • Participate in a team environment to determine and coordinate fundraising priorities, plans, and activities among KU Endowment, KU Cancer Center, and the Health System.  Develop and implement both annual and long-range goals, objectives, and strategies to meet the private support needs of the KU Cancer Center consistent with the overall plans of KU Endowment, the Medical Center and the Health System.
  • To the benefit of KU Cancer Center, work closely with and fully utilize the resources of KU Endowment to further the fundraising agenda (i.e. donor relations, prospect research and management, communications, planned giving, etc.)
  • Assist in the development of Annual Giving strategies to raise awareness of and affinity for the KU Cancer Center.  This includes collaborating with the KU Endowment annual giving team about donor acquisition, retention and high impact messaging initiatives.  
  • Position requires an extensive amount of time out of the office and travel as needed to meet development goals. 
  • In a team environment, supervise the assistant who provides administrative support for this area. 
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned by KU Endowment leadership. 
  • Upholds the highest level of professionalism, integrity, and judgment as a member of the KU Endowment team.
What’s required to be considered:
  • Bachelor’s degree 
What separates the best from the rest?
  • At least 1 to 3 years’ experience in professional fundraising experience in higher education fund raising (major gift experience in a health care setting preferred).
  • Related experience such as university advancement, business development, and sales may also be considered.  
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are essential.
  • Must possess the ability to initiate, organize and follow through with fundraising strategies.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and exercise excellent judgment.
