Director of Development

Reports to: President and CEO

Status: Exempt, Full-Time

Supervises: Grants and Development Specialist and Development Coordinator

Location: Kansas City metropolitan area, hybrid position

You are a member of the senior management team and provides leadership for the fundraising of Mid-America Arts Alliance. You will plan, organize, evaluate, and manage all of our systems and methods for securing contributed income from private sources. You will sustain operating funds and ensure funding for core programs. You will establish and nurture, collegial working relationships with co-workers and represent us. You will work directly with the President and CEO and Board of Directors to meet the short- and long-term contributed income.

You will:

  • Sustain the Development division by helping obtain the funding needed to support our local, regional, and national programming.
  • Provide oversight of the Development division.
  • Research, identify, and cultivate private and public funds.
  • Write and monitor the development plan
  • Coordinate with the President and CEO to determine funding priorities
  • Track trends in development and philanthropy
  • Organize the department's work to ensure efficient and accurate production of grant proposals and funding requests.
  • Communicate (by telephone, email, and mail) with funders to keep them informed of M-AAA's work.
  • Follow up with funders when proposals are declined
  • Work with board members to identify and cultivate potential funders
  • Assist Treasurer and Chair in annual campaign solicitation
  • Work with the President and CEO and Director of Finance to track all contributed revenue in detail
  • Review and edit funding proposals
  • Coordinate state caucus conference calls between board meetings
  • Monitor appropriate acknowledgment of funders and ensure funder goals are met
  • Monitor program in conjunction with grant requirements to ensure fulfillment of all grant requirements
  • Oversee organization, staffing, and reporting for state caucus meetings
  • Participate in management meetings, program meetings, and all staff meetings
  • Prepare all development documents for board and committee meetings
  • Oversee internal department activity, including maintaining operational and budget controls
  • Keep the President and CEO informed of significant developments, potential problems, and related information necessary for management.
  • Directly manage Grants and Development Specialist and Development Coordinator. This includes interviewing and conducting performance evaluations with the President and CEO.

You Have:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 5+ years of experience in grant writing and research.
  • Manage and motivate team.
  • Collaborate with staff, professional colleagues, and supporters.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, with meticulous attention to detail.

Working Conditions:

Most work is sedentary, with sitting at a desk using a computer, phone, and other office equipment. However, you will occasionally travel to attend Board meetings and other organization and community events. Your work requires reading, editing, researching, and evaluating a variety of materials. This is a hybrid work position with the flexibility to routinely work remotely. You must be located in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
