Director of Donor Relations

As Kansas City’s largest and most comprehensive no kill pet adoption campus, Wayside Waifs prepares pets and people for the bond of their lives. More than 25,000 pets and people are served annually through pet adoptions, youth education, canine training programs, community outreach, pet memorial services, and more. Wayside is a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity with local, regional, and national programming. We are supported by private donations and grants. STARTING SALARY: $70,000 - $75,000
POSITION SUMMARY

  1. Manage a portfolio of 100 donors with giving potential of $10,000+ gifts.
  2. Create, manage, and implement Donor Engagement Plans for each assigned donor, based on their interests and passions.
  3. Create donor proposals/grant requests, project budgets, donor asks, and recognition.
  4. Manage Purr Gamma Bark, Wayside’s sorority/auxiliary group.
  5. Generate monthly reports with caseload progress.
  6. Perform other duties as required.
PRIMARY TASKS & DUTIES 
  1. Meet with individual, corporate, and foundation representatives to engage them in support of Wayside’s mission. When appropriate and requested by the donor, work with the Donor Relations Team to organize onsite or offsite donor cultivation events/activities.
  2. Qualifying and disqualifying donors. Retaining and upgrading donors.
  3. Working with shelter staff to gather information needed to create inspiring donor proposals.
  4. Writing donor proposals, grant requests, and submitting grant reports.
  5. Creating timely reports to keep the team updated on confirmed and projected gifts.
  6. Being a team player. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/ KEY COMPETENCIES 

  1. Enthusiasm for building relationships and connecting with community members
  2. Non-judgmental attitude and open mindedness, even in difficult situations
  3. High level of organization and ability to manage many different components of the Donor Relations Program, which includes special event fundraising, corporate fundraising, grant writing for Foundation support, and implementing Purr Gamma Bark, Wayside’s Auxiliary Donor Membership Program
  4. Comfortable interacting with dogs and cats 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS 
Education/Experience

  • 5+ years in donor relations/fundraising – as a fundraiser, director of development, and/or major gift officer is required
  • Bachelor degree in communications, public relations, journalism, nonprofit management, liberal arts, or similar field is preferred
  • CFRE preferred
  • Experience working with high-level donors and corporate executives securing gifts, nonprofit engagement, and/or sponsorships
  • Excellent communication, presentation skills, and writing skills
  • Computer skills, which include basic knowledge of Microsoft office products. Raiser’s Edge NXT is preferred. 
Working Environment  
  • Both office and outdoor settings.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and be willing to drive the Wayside Waifs’ van.
  • Willing to travel to area locations in year-round weather conditions
  • Ability to use computer, telephone, copy machines, media equipment.
  • May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, noise level is moderate to high, frequently working with and exposed to a variety of animals.
