Director of Major Gifts, Henry W. Bloch School of Management

Purpose: The Director of Major Gifts (MGD) for the UMKC Bloch School of Management leads the fundraising activities of the school in concert with the dean. Responsibilities include donor visits, proposal development, and identification and solicitation of major gifts (more than $25,000) from individuals, corporations, and foundations. In addition, the MGD develops annual fundraising plans based on the school’s priorities as identified in concert with the dean. Serving as the liaison between the Bloch School of Management and the UMKC Foundation, the MGD is an integral member of the UMKC Foundation team.

The position must sustain positive and mutually rewarding relationships between the Bloch School of Management and its donors; partner with other major gift directors to determine the best strategies for effective stewardship of Bloch School donors; maintain ongoing and active networking with internal and external constituencies; and oversee recognition events, marketing and communications for the school’s donors.

Organizational Relationships: The Director of Major Gifts has a dual reporting relationship to a UMKC Foundation Assistant Vice President and the Dean of the Bloch School of Management.

Essential Duties:

  • Qualify and cultivate prospective donors.
  • Develop and propose strategies for solicitation of major gifts, including: determining ongoing relationships with prospect/donor; recommending specific purpose and level of gift; identifying those to be involved in cultivation and subsequent solicitation; assuring that solicitations are carried out.
  • Work closely with the Director of Annual Giving to insure effective coordination of solicitation strategies as well as the Director of Prospect Research to reinforce the prospect relationship continuum.
  • Participate, as required, in UMKC Foundation team efforts including solicitation strategy teams for key prospects and internal planning efforts.
  • Work in concert with Bloch School faculty and staff to keep current on programs and faculty/research/student initiatives.
  • Network externally with UMKC alumni, Bloch School donors and community organizations in support of the business and entrepreneurship. Coordinate an effective program for recognition, involvement and stewardship of major and special gifts donors in coordination with the Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship.
  • Manage fundraising efforts for the annual Entrepreneur of the Year event in coordination with volunteers, Regnier Institute leadership and other university event planning staff.
Knowledge Required: The incumbent will be skilled at managing prospects from identification through stewardship. He/she will communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Other key skills include:

Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of major donors in order to develop relationships between them and the University.
  • Interest in all aspects of education and a dedication to promoting the University’s fundraising priorities through developing excellent working relationships with faculty, senior academic leaders, trustees and other volunteers, and the UMKC Foundation team.
  • Demonstrated leadership and the ability to successfully manage multi-functional or diverse areas.
  • This officer must be able to work independently while also working as a member of the university fundraising team.
  • Ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and alter strategic fundraising plans.
  • Ability to articulate the case for support so that individuals understand and invest in the vision/mission/goals of the University and the School to secure gifts and pledges of $25,000 or more.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, analytical and organization skills required.
  • Knowledge of tax laws that impact charitable giving, personal assets and estates a plus.
  • In addition to these general skills, the position requires the ability to participate in all aspects of the gift cycle:(1) to initiate contacts with potential major donors; (2) to develop appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers; (3) to move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure; (4) to make solicitations when appropriate; (5) to maintain stewardship contacts with donors.
  • Must be able to travel.

Education and Experience: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. A master’s degree in business, public administration or management preferred. A minimum of five or more years of experience in individual major gift fundraising and working with volunteer boards and committees, preferably in higher education, or related field are required. Knowledge and appreciation for business, entrepreneurship, and management, required.

Guidelines: Guidelines are provided by the goals and objectives of the position, by fundraising strategies and techniques, by stewardship guidelines, and by the goals of the UMKC Foundation and the mission of the University. Confidentiality and discretion are mandatory.

Complexity: The ability to interact comfortably, tactfully, and effectively with varied internal and external constituencies is essential. Must display a high level of maturity and personal integrity and ability to understand, develop, and sustain resilient and dynamic relationships with donors, colleagues, and senior management.

Scope and Effect: Responsible for building and maintaining relationships with donors, this position has a significant effect on private giving. Success in this role affects the Bloch School of Management’s ability to meet its goals of providing the best possible education and conducting life-changing research.  

Environmental Demands: This position does not require unusual physical ability. Frequent travel, as well as evening/weekend work, are required.

Salary Range: Commensurate with experience.
