Donor Relations Manager

Great Plains SPCA is one of the largest shelters in the Kansas City metro area. We provided quality shelter care for nearly 4,000 animals yearly. We provide daily care, medical care, and enrichment for our shelter animals. We provide foster and forever home placements, pet behavior training services, and HERO Community Outreach.

GPSPCA is seeking a Donor Relations Manager. This position is responsible for growing our financial strength through current and future donors including individual, community, corporations, foundations and grants

This position will be considered remote with occasional meetings and visits to the Merriam, KS location. The ideal candidate will be local to the Greater Kansas City area or willing to relocate to the area.


  • Manage a portfolio of donors and prospects through the giving cycle from research and identification through engagement, solicitation, gift closure and stewardship.
  • Plan and execute personal face-to-face visits to fulfill individual and team solicitation strategies and goals to achieve metric targets.
  • Conduct thorough and appropriate follow up with potential donors who have attended our events to engage them in the gift process.
  • Help create customized solicitation strategies and donor relations materials to engender new donor relationships and maintain support from existing donors.
  • Work in conjunction with Development Director and CEO in identifying and prioritizing new initiatives, needs and opportunities that could benefit from development efforts including ways to incentivize program support.
  • Support the organization in sustaining a vibrant and comprehensive development program and related activities as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with Great Plains SPCA Marketing & Events team.
  • Contribute to departmental goals and assist in a smooth flow of development operations by accomplishing related duties as required.

  • Demonstrated results in soliciting and closing major program gifts with capability to advance gift strategies through effective relationship building.
  • Solid experience creating and leading planned giving programs.
  • Must be organized, creative, pro-active, detail oriented with strong ability to prioritize with superior time management and troubleshooting skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong software skills in creating original documents, reports, mobile communications and electronic messaging.
  • Must be comfortable working in an animal shelter around cats, dogs, rabbits and other animals on a daily basis.
  • Some travel required.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Education and Experience

  • 3 -5 years of related/relevant development experience
  • Experience in animal shelter and/or nonprofit organizations a plus.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and fundraising database management a must.

Work Conditions

  • Must be comfortable working around all types of pets including dogs,cats etc.
  • Physical requirements are those present in normal office environment conditions. Employee is required to sit at a desk and work at computer for long periods of time.
  • Operational flexibility is required to meet sudden and unpredictable needs.
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, dangerous and fractious animals, and high noise levels.
  • Work schedule and hours may vary; evenings and weekends may be required.
  • Schedule Mon – Fri, nights and weekends possible depending on events.
