Kansas City Public Library - Development Director

The Kansas City Public Library is one of the most iconic institutions in metropolitan Kansas City. Established in 1873, the Library provides educational resources and serves as a cultural center for the community. The Library’s district includes Kansas City and portions of western Independence and Sugar Creek.

The Development Director will work with the Executive Director, Chief Financial Officer, Deputy Director for Public Affairs and Community Engagement, Deputy Director of Library Services and others as a member of the Library’s leadership team. The role’s primary responsibility is to raise funds aggressively and engage others in the process.  Working with the Chief Executive Officer, the Development Director will develop strategies, action plans and programs for fundraising and development activities and provide leadership in integrating those efforts with the Library’s strategic plan, vision and mission.

Bachelor’s degree in related field, and considerable, successful experience in fundraising and major gift solicitation or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The Development Director will:

  • Provide leadership to the Library’s forthcoming integrated campaign
  • Develop fundraising goals and objectives, aligned with the Library’s strategic plan, goals and initiatives
  • Work closely with the CEO and CFO to ensure alignment and integration of all development functions with the Library’s mission, vision, budgets and benchmarks
  • Interview and hire a Development Associate for the library’s development department
  • Maintain and deepen fundraising relationships with major individual donors, foundations and corporate sponsors while attracting new major gift supporters
  • Organize and oversee fundraising activities related to, but not limited to: online marketing, grants, events, volunteers, campaigns, annual fund program, planned giving program
  • Provide leadership in the identification, cultivation, solicitation and appreciation of donors
  • Expand corporate sponsorship opportunities
  • Monitor and adapt to new trends and developments in the profession
  • Measure and evaluate the effectiveness of fundraising activities
  • Perform other related work and undertake special projects as assigned
