Vice President of Development

The Vice President of Development is primarily responsible for maintaining a portfolio of key donor relations while also managing and motivating the Newhouse development and administrative team. This individual works collaboratively with the President/CEO, the Board of Directors and other members of the Senior Management Team. The individual is ethical, honest, organized and serves as a role model for all staff.

Supervisory Relationships

Reports directly to the President/CEO.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement annual and long-range fund development plans for the agency, insuring that the agency’s mission is reflected throughout all efforts. 
  • Supervise professional development and administrative staff and those volunteers who work in the development department.
  • Assist with agency budget development and compliance. Conduct the annual budget planning and preparation with the President
  • Develop and implement fundraising activities to solicit major gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations, faith communities and civic groups.  This includes initial inquiries, meetings, and follow-up. May work closely with the President/CEO and board members in this process.
  • Oversee the creation and implementation of all fundraising special events and appeals.
  • Take primary responsibility for any capital campaigns the agency conducts, working closely with any consultants, board members, committees, the President and staff members.
  • Oversee development of printed materials that generate information about and support Newhouse and its fundraising efforts.
  • Coordinate up-to-date mailing lists and donor database, ensuring that donations are recorded and proper stewardship is conducted, including personal thank you calls.
  • Serve as primary staff support for the Fundraising Committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Serve as a member of the senior management team and be a role model for staff and clients by modeling appropriate behaviors, attitudes and interactions.
  • Work with president and other senior managers to build staff morale and foster an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration.
  • Prepare reports related to fundraising and revenue generation as needed. Present monthly reports on development activities to the board of directors.
  • Oversee development and implementation of all public relations activities. Duties may include writing public service announcements and developing contacts for appearances on television, radio and other visible media.
  • Meet regularly with the President/CEO and keep them informed of all activities.
  • Be familiar with all aspects of the agency via cross-training.
  • Serve as on-call supervisor on a rotating basis.  
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned by the President/CEO.
Skills and Knowledge Required
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in social service, communication, business, advertising/public relations or related field and highly effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • At least five years’ experience in fundraising, with expertise in writing grant proposals, conducting special events and annual appeals and database management. Preference for supervisory experience as well.
  • Prefer capital campaign or similar campaign experience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with donors, board members and staff.
  • Knowledge of community resources and current fundraising trends.
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision, serve actively as a member of the Senior Management Team and be a role model to staff.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work extra hours (including weekends, if necessary) to complete agency business.
  • Ability to be an open, critical and creative thinker.
  • Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge donor management software.
  • Excellent typing, computer, and record keeping skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Must pass background check and produce a valid driver’s license.
