TITLE: Communications & Operations Associate

REPORTS TO: Chief Operating Officer

START DATE: June 2021

BACKGROUND:

The Kansas City Teacher Residency (KCTR) is designed to accelerate student achievement in local public schools through the recruitment, preparation, and support of highly skilled and diverse new teachers. KCTR’s mission is to serve high-need urban schools in Kansas City, Missouri through the lens of our core values of mission-driven, high expectations, collaboration, growth mindset, care and love, ownership, and persistence. KCTR is a post-baccalaureate teacher preparation program that offers more time and development focused on the competencies of highly-effective teachers, more coaching and support through the Residency year and in the first three years of teaching, and more time in school learning alongside a Mentor Teacher for a full school year.

Pioneered in the early 2000s in Boston, Chicago, and Denver, teacher residency programs adapt the medical residency model to teacher preparation and are designed to provide Residents with the skills, knowledge, and practical experiences necessary to become highly effective teachers. In pursuit of this goal, KCTR is committed to providing the following support:

  • A rigorous, year-long Clinical Experience alongside a highly effective Mentor Teacher focusing on instructional practices proven to promote student learning;

  • Concentrated and aligned coursework focused on urban education, culminating in Initial Teacher Certification in the state of Missouri after year one, and a Master’s Degree after year two;

  • A collaborative cohort experience with fellow Residents who share a passion for urban education;

  • A comprehensive Resident Graduate program during years 1-3 as a Teacher of Record.

POSITION OVERVIEW: 

The Communication and Operations Associate will be an integral part of the KCTR Operations Team in  producing engaging internal & external communications as well as effective & efficient operations.  Communications focus areas include: developing and executing a communications strategy, managing KCTR social media channels and website, as well as reflecting on engagement data.  Operational focus areas include developing marketing & collateral for program initiatives, enhancing operational systems, and ensuring smooth office operations. This role will work closely in collaboration with the current Operations Associate. In addition to the collaborative nature of this position, this role will also be responsible for independently managing different initiatives related to communications and or operations. This role will be responsible for managing different initiatives while also heavily collaborating with members of the operations team & KCTR at large.  

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Communications & Marketing

  • Set communications strategy for social media, newsletters, website, and external marketing

  • Continuously invest staff and stakeholders in communications strategy 

  • Collaboratively manage KCTR website including regular blog posts, updates based on programmatic initiatives, and monitoring for accurate information 

  • Collaboratively manage KCTR social media channels including content generation, and responding to posts

  • Monitor social media engagement and set goals for increased impact

  • Write copy for various communications initiatives

Program Operations

  • Support in the regular publishing of the stakeholder newsletters

  • Collaborate with program, talent, & development teams to create & disseminate marketing and collateral for events and campaigns

  • Support in record keeping and compliance documentation

Operational Support

  • Design, implement, and enhance operational systems and processes that support the work of other team members and the organization at large

  • Engage visitors to KCTR through their first point of contact with our organization (ex: phone calls, in-person guests, website requests, etc)

  • Manage office collaboration spaces including supplies, technology, & expectations for use

  • Support office maintenance including inventory of assets and consumable items

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • Prior experience in communications, marketing, or social media is required

  • Experience in graphic design is encouraged

  • Previous experience as an administrative assistant is encouraged

  • Experience in urban public schools, with a deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges within that dynamic environment, is preferred

  • High level of competency with Google Apps and MS Office products

  • Access to a reliable vehicle

  • Bachelor’s Degree is preferred

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time and frequently move about inside the office or other locations

  • This person frequently communicates with stakeholders and external vendors, as such they must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. 

TRAVEL: 

  • This role requires reliable transportation and willingness to travel to and from partner sites. Occasional overnight travel is required for training purposes.

COMPENSATION:

  • The Kansas City Teacher Residency offers a competitive compensation package, including benefits, aligned to previous experience and the anticipated duties & responsibilities.  The average entry salary range for this position is  $46,000-$50,000, to be determined upon final offer.  

  • Benefits include: medical, dental, and vision; flexible paid time off, holidays and vacation, access to a retirement plan with 2% match, short & long-term disability, mileage reimbursement for business related travel, and cell phone allowance.
