Executive Director

Position Title:  Executive Director
Status:  Full Time/Exempt Employee
Reports To:  The Executive Director reports directly to the Turn the Page KC Board of Directors in the performance of their routine duties. 

The Search 
Turn the Page KC welcomes nominations and applications for its next Executive Director. The organization with over 50 Community partners is on its way to increasing the percentage of Kansas City students who read proficiently by the end of third grade. This role has the opportunity to accelerate this progress.  Currently, more than half of all KCMO third graders are not reading at grade level. 
The executive director is responsible for managing the organization’s budget, fundraising efforts and the implementation of the organization’s strategic plan.

Opportunities and Challenges

  • Develop a unified voice for over 50 community partners in order to create a meaningful unified voice for reaching the goal of 3rd grade reading proficiency. 
  • Provide influential leadership while building relationships and collaborating with multiple stakeholders, including the school system, local government, program providers, funders, members of the media, and other partners throughout the community.
  • Elevate the messages of Turn the Page KC through marketing and communications efforts in order to reach a broad and diverse audience. 
  • Develop a high-functioning, action-oriented team of board members, staff, and contractors.
  • Serve as the organization’s lead fundraiser, ensuring that the organization meets its annual budgeted revenue from foundations, individuals, and corporations.
  • Build and manage relationships with contractors that provide financial administration, materials development, event coordination, and other contracted services.
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson to the organization’s supporters, the media, and the general public.
Turn the Page KC overview
Turn the Page KC mobilizes our entire community to ensure children gain the literacy skills they need to create a lifetime of opportunity. The organization was founded by Mayor Sly James in 2011 as an initiative to raise the reading proficiency of third graders, which at the time was only 33%. The organization’s Founding Executive Director, Mike English, has decided to step down and pursue other opportunities. This position is a great opportunity for someone passionate about educational opportunity in Kansas City.

Qualifications and Experience:
•        Fundraising skills and experience
•        Demonstrated ability to relate and engage with a variety of stakeholders and external partners such as civic leaders, community organizations, media outlets, direct service providers, and parents 
•        Lived experience in the communities that Turn the Page KC serves
•        Ability to work both autonomously and effectively in collaboration with other stakeholders 
•        Involvement in education, early childhood development or literacy efforts  
•        Experience and familiarity within the KC region educational community
•        Demonstrated skills in working with diverse groups of people  
•        Experience with public speaking, persuasion and advocacy  
•        Proven leadership, collaboration and coordination skills and experience 
•        Strategic planning, implementation, and proven track record in program evaluation
•        Experience working closely with a Board of Directors 
•        Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in education, communications, public administration, or a related field, preferred 
•        8-10 years of professional experience in education, public or nonprofit administration or philanthropic leadership
