Kansas City Community Gardens: Giving Grove Horticulture Assistant

Kansas City Community Gardens, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, has an opening for a Giving Grove Horticulture Assistant.  The Giving Grove program mission is to improve local food security and strengthen communities by bringing together the resources to develop edible tree gardens. These gardens include fruit trees, berries and nuts, and represent a sustainable, healthy food system for communities in need.
Position Description: The Giving Grove Horticulture Assistant is a full-time year-round position that helps with the operational details of planting and maintaining fruit trees in the Kansas City area. This is primarily an outdoor position that assists with the planting of trees, maintaining nursery stock and maintaining existing orchards. This requires the use of, and familiarity with, landscaping and fruit tree tools and terms. Prospective candidate will also provide support to existing groups and orchards in our on-going educational and outreach support. Projects are located throughout the metropolitan area in a wide variety of neighborhoods, schools, non-profits, parks, and communities of faith.

  • Organize and maintain nursery stock
  • Assist with ongoing maintenance of demonstration orchards
  • Assist with site planting preparation
  • Assist with delivering of project materials to the site
  • Assist sites with horticultural advice
  • Assist and/or lead workshops
  • Supervise one or multiple volunteer teams
  • Use of trailer and tractor (internal training available)
  • Clean, organize and repair tools and equipment
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to lift over 50 lbs
  • Work in all kinds of weather
  • Ability to work Saturdays during spring and fall planting seasons
  • Ability to work with children (background check will be required)
Preferred skills, experience, or certifications (but not required):
  • Vegetable and gardening or related plant knowledge
  • Landscaping experience
  • Good communication skills (written and oral)
  • Record keeping and organizational skills
  • Experience teaching classes or workshops
  • Ability to lead or direct volunteer groups
Reports To:  Giving Grove Horticulturist, Matt Bunch
Timeframe & Hours
  • Full time 40 hours a week
  • Will require project work on Saturdays in the Spring and Fall
  • 27K - 31K
