Executive Director

The Executive Director is in charge of overseeing the organization’s strategic vision and leading day-to-day business operations for the Systems of Care Initiative (SOCI). The Executive Director is responsible for managing the organization’s business operations, fundraising and communication. The duties include implementing strategic plans for the organization’s development and managing relationships with stakeholders. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and will work closely with the Program Director. 


Duties and Responsibilities


  • Manage and execute fundraising efforts to meet ambitious annual goals by identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding public, individual, corporate, and foundation sources of giving  

  • Ensure the organization has a viable long-term financial plan and a diversified and sustainable funding base

  • Work with the Board of Directors to increase charitable contributions to the organization 


  • Act as the public relations representative of SOCI 

  • Develop and execute communications plans aimed at strengthening the organization’s mission and vision, fundraising efforts and visibility in the community 

  • Create and/or oversee the creation of promotional, informative and fundraising  materials within all forms of media, including press releases and digital campaigns, print materials, social media, audio and video and more

  • Ensure all organization materials have consistent and positive messaging and branding

  • Responsible for developing relationships with media outlets and other relevant industry organizations, associations and companies


Governance and Administrative 

  • Ensure business practices comply with regulatory and legal requirements of nonprofit organizations

  • In cooperation with the Board of Directors, responsible for budget development, financial forecasting, monitoring fiscal responsibilities, and directs short- and long-range resource planning   

  • Work with external CPA to ensure tax preparation (e.g., IRS Form 990 and other state and federal filing requirements) and provide audit support as directed by the SOCI Board 

  • Responsible for all duties of office management, including monthly bookkeeping, monitoring Quickbooks, synching bank accounts, and reviewing revenue/expense entries to ensure accurate descriptions for allocation of revenue and expenditures.

  • Forge and maintain relationships with the Board of Directors; assist in Board growth, education and engagement, including management and execution of regularly scheduled Board meetings

  • Develop and implement strategic plans aimed at promoting the organization’s mission and vision 

    • Represent the company at social and corporate events in ways that strengthen the brand and communicate the company’s message

    • In collaboration with the Program Director, develop partnerships with early education centers, scholarship recipient families, and other relevant stakeholders 

    • Collaborate with Program Director to ensure program implementation and evaluation 

  • Identify potential risks and opportunities within the organization and its environment to protect mission interest


Required Skills

  • Experience in developing strategies and plans

  • Highly-focused and mission driven

  • Ability to apply successful fundraising and networking techniques

  • Strong understanding of nonprofit finance and measures of performance

  • In depth knowledge of nonprofit governance principles and best practices

  • Excellent written, verbal and digital communication skills and public speaking skills

  • Analytical skills to solve problems and find the best way to convey a message

  • The creativity to produce exciting and interesting content

  • Organizational skills and the ability to multitask and prioritize projects while working on a deadline or in a fast-paced environment

  • Technological ability to create web and mobile content

  • Knowledge of and proficiency in Microsoft Excel and social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and others  


Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience in nonprofit management and fundraising, including successful grant writing and donor relations

  • Background in Early Education and/or nonprofit work

  • Donor management experience  

  • Public speaking experience 

  • Identifying funding sources in private and public sectors

  • Program or organizational management

  • Marketing design software expertise 

  • Photography skills 

  • Prior experience and contacts with the media relations


    Applicants should be based in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area; work will be performed virtually/remotely
