Executive Director

The International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) is a global, nonprofit educational and research membership group for government assessment officials and professionals in property tax administration. Established in 1934, IAAO boasts over 8,400 members from various sectors and operates with an annual budget of $6.6 million, employing 24 full-time staff at its Kansas City, Missouri headquarters.
IAAO's mission is to foster a global network of appraisal experts committed to fair property valuation and tax policy, providing professional development, research, and guidance. It aims to be acknowledged worldwide as the authoritative voice for mass appraisal standards, professional growth, and policy research through our guiding principles of professional development, community engagement, communications & advocacy, and business innovation.

We are seeking an Executive Director who embodies the qualities of a strategic visionary and plays a central role in driving IAAO's vision, mission, strategic direction, and annual objectives. This individual will be responsible for ensuring the successful execution of the organization’s overall strategic plan while overseeing and managing all facets of the association. The Executive Director will work closely and transparently with the Board of Directors to formulate strategies and translate them into actionable strategies aimed at fostering growth. IAAO is experiencing a period of remarkable growth, fueled by a dedicated team and fortified with a strategic plan to propel the association’s mission. The Executive Director must be a strong leader and advocate for IAAO’s mission, its members, and its staff.
In this role you will:

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop a vision and strategic plan that will steer, amplify and grow the association.
  • Identify, evaluate, and communicate internal and external factors that impact the association, its members, and the Board of Directors.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive communications and public relations strategies on national and international levels.
  • Build, lead, and inspire a team of dedicated professionals, who will succeed based on a culture of transparency, collaboration, innovation, excellence, and accountability, ultimately fostering a positive, healthy, and secure workplace.
  • Formulate policies for Board approval and establish implementation procedures while offering administrative support to the Board.
  • Supervise the development, execution, and assessment of IAAO's programs and services, ensuring alignment with the mission and strategic plan with a growth strategy focused on increased membership.
  • Develop comprehensive financial strategies to ensure the organization’s financial growth and sustainability.
  • Analyze financial data and market trends to identify new opportunities and expand programmatic offerings.
  • Manage the preparation and revision of financial forecasts, budgets, and long-term financial plans.
  • Participate in an annual 360 review

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; advanced degree such as an MBA and/or a designation such as Certified Association Executive (CAE) preferred.
  • At least five years of senior management experience, ideally in a membership-driven nonprofit association with an emphasis on professional education and certification programs.
  • Ability to think strategically with strong organizational skills, including planning, delegating, program development, task facilitation.
  • Experience in personnel management encompassing human resources, compensation, and benefits administration, with the capability to show appreciation for staff and to seek and integrate their feedback.
  • Ability to demonstrate understanding of the need for diversity and inclusion across all aspects of the association.
  • Experience leading a national or international association.
  • Proven success working with a senior leadership team and with a Board of Directors, with the ability to cultivate board member relationships.
  • Experience in property tax administration and assessment and/or real estate.
The Executive Director primarily works in an office setting in Kansas City, with the possibility of some remote work matching the hybrid schedule of staff. This role necessitates frequent overnight travel, and occasional international travel, which may account for more than 40% of the time. Expectations include standard workweeks as well as the likelihood of evenings, weekends, and extended hours to support events such as Board meetings and representing the organization.
The projected compensation range for this position will be competitive and in accordance with the background and experience of the selected candidate, IAAO currently provides the Executive Director options including, fully-paid Medical, Dental, Vision and Life plans, and a 403(b) plan with annual and matching contributions.

Note: Preliminary interviews will be conducted remote. Currently, IAAO plans for semi-finalist candidates to complete interviews in person at the offices of IAAO and finalist candidates to interview at a meeting of the Board of Directors.
