American Public Square, a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization, brings together non-like-minded people to engage in civil, fact-based dialogue about controversial, potentially polarizing topics that impact our city, region, nation and world.  The organization is currently seeking candidates for the Executive Director/COO position.

The Executive Director/COO is the key management, fundraising and operations leader of American Public Square. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, fundraising, programs and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include marketing and community outreach. The position reports directly to the President/Chairman of the Board who represents the Executive and Advisory Boards of Directors.

General Responsibilities:

Board Governance: Works with Executive and Advisory Boards in order to fulfill the organization’s mission to bring together non-like-minded people to engage in civil, fact-based dialogue on potentially polarizing, controversial issues that impact our city, region, nation and world.?
  • Responsible for leading American Public Square in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.?
  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the President/Chairman and Boards and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Boards to function properly and to make informed decisions.?
Fundraising and Ongoing Financial Viability: Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health and long-term viability of the organization.?
  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of American Public Square, to include submission to the Executive Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.?
  • Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.?
  • Responsible for fundraising and developing other resources necessary to support American Public Square’s mission.?
Organization Mission and Strategy: Works with the Boards and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and community outreach.?
  • Responsible for implementation of American Public Square’s programs that carry out the organization’s mission.?
  • Responsible for strategic planning to ensure that American Public Square can successfully fulfill its Mission into the future.?
  • Responsible for the enhancement of American Public Square’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic and private organizations.?
Organization Operations: Oversees and implements appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate.?
  • Responsible effective administration of American Public Square operations.
  • Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff.
Professional Qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent educational degree
  • Transparent and high integrity leadership
  • Five or more years senior nonprofit management experience or equivalent experience in other sectors
  • Solid, hands-on, budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting
  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation
  • Ability to convey a vision of American Public Square’s strategic future to staff, Boards, volunteers and donors
  • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to nonprofit sector
  • Skills to collaborate with and motivate Board members and other volunteers
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to interface and engage diverse volunteer and donor groups
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff
  • Strong public speaking ability
Actual Job Responsibilities:
  1. Planning and operation of annual budget.
  2. Establishing employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of the nonprofit.
  3. Fundraising with current and prospective donors; ongoing donor relations and communications.
  4. Serving as one of American Public Square’s primary spokespersons to the organization’s constituents, the media and the general public.
  5. Establish and maintain relationships with various organizations throughout the city and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance American Public Square’s mission.
  6. Report to and work closely with the President/Chairman of the Board and the Boards of Directors to seek their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising and to increase the overall visibility of the organization throughout the region.
  7. Supervise, collaborate with organization staff.
  8. Strategic planning and implementation.
  9. Work with President/Chairman of the Board to organize and facilitate regular meetings of the Executive Board and Advisory Board.
  10. Oversee committee meetings.
  11. Oversee marketing and other communications efforts.
  12. Review and approve contracts for services.
  13. Other duties as assigned by the President/Chairman of the Board and Boards of Directors.
