Position Purpose:
Support Kansas City (SKC), a national leader in nonprofit shared services, has continued to grow and strengthen our model by focusing on our mission of providing business and development services so that the nonprofits we support can focus on their respective missions.  The SKC Board of Directors is looking for a mission-focused, strategic and process-minded leader with experience in nonprofit shared services, leading an executive management team, and developing a performance culture among a group of talented and culturally diverse individuals.   The CEO must be a leader who is able to help others at SKC deliver measurable, cost-effective results that build our client’s capacity and efficiencies.  The CEO must be a confident leader that can continue to represent SKC locally, regionally and nationally in building SKC’s reputation as a shared service provider.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Board of SKC, the CEO will lead all business and development activities and be the representative for SKC.  Additionally, the CEO will be the chief financial officer (CFO) and the chief development officer (CDO). The CEO will have the following responsibilities:
  • Working in partnership with the Board of Directors to support the theory of change and the strategic goals of SKC’s mission and vision
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality services while managing for current and future growth
  • Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship with the Board and ensure open communication about the measurement of financial, programmatic, impact performance against stated milestones and goals
  • Serve as the external leader of the organization:
    • Initiates partnership and collaborations with like-minded groups on projects that align with our mission
    • Prospective client engagement and proposal development
    • Collective impact initiatives:
      • identify and develop initiatives that align with SKC’s mission and theory of change
      • provide oversight to existing initiatives
    • Lead the organization’s fund development efforts; as the CDO, working in tandem with the board of directors to ensure foundation and donor support to augment SKC’s fee structure and continued organizational growth and capacity building 
  • Provide internal organizational leadership:
    • Lead the organization’s budget development for board approval; as CFO, monitor budget performance, cash flow and use of restricted funds
    • Provide services to clients in the areas of governance and strategic planning
  • Provide oversight to the COO, the administrative and the collective impact initiative staff
  • Is knowledgeable about industry trends/compliance
    • Is informed about software, tools and resources that enhance our service offerings, bringing thought leadership and added value to our service delivery model
    • Monitors compliance issues and works with staff and leadership to communicate impact for our clients and our sector
  • Works in tandem with the COO to manage and assess risk through effective development and implementation of SKC’s policies and procedures
Key Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have had management experience with a for-profit and/or a nonprofit organization.  SKC is an organization driven by the values of its people, so experience in managing a value-driven and culturally competent organization will be prized.  The CEO supports a culture of partnership and acts as the role model for the culture.  Additional requirements are:
  • Results-proven track record of exceeding goals and a bottom-line orientation; evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment; high level of business acumen including successful P&L management; the ability to balance the delivery of services against the realities of a budget; and problem solving, project management, and creative resourcefulness
  • Strategic Vision and Agility-ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporating them into the organizational plan
  • Leadership and Organization – exceptional capacity for managing and leading people; a team builder who has experience in scaling up organizations; ability to connect staff both at an individual level and in large groups; capacity to enforce accountability, develop and empower top-notch leaders from the bottom up, lead from the top down, cultivate entrepreneurship, and learn the strengths and weaknesses of the team so as to put people in a position to succeed
  • Action Oriented – enjoys working hard and looks for challenges; able to act and react as necessary, even if limited information is available; not afraid to take charge of a situation
  • Minimum 5 years previous experience as an Executive Director or CEO of a nonprofit preferred with strengths in accounting and governance
  • Proven relationships with foundations and philanthropic leaders
  • Solid educational background – undergraduate degree required, MBA, MPA, CPA or similar advanced degree highly desired
