Medical Assistant

Position Summary:

Under medical/nursing supervision, assist provider and nursing staff in the delivery of health care services; perform related duties as required utilizing the PCMH model of care.

 

Essential Functions:

Clinical Care Duties:

  • Assist providers with patient care such as examinations, procedures and treatments in a professional manner.
  • Prepare patients for examinations, procedures and treatments. Obtain vital signs, measure height and weight; perform vision and auditory screening as needed; record all information in Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Obtain medical history, history of present illness and/or chief complaint and record in EHR. Perform all screening required such as PHQ, SBIRT, PRAPARE according to current procedures.
  • Obtain information related to chronic disease(s) and document in appropriate disease management templates.
  • Participate in management of chronic disease registries including making calls to patients for recommended care and maintaining all documentation.
  • Conduct tests and procedures as directed.
  • Adhere to established patient screening procedures.
  • Inventory and order supplies, stock exam rooms.
  • Assist with scheduling for walk-ins, specialty care referrals or ancillary testing.
  • Draw blood, collect specimens and perform on-site laboratory procedures and maintains current phlebotomy skills and knowledge including documentation and preparation of specimens.
  • Process specimens for transport and process lab results per established procedures.
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies.
  • Provide TB testing and subsequent readings in an appropriate time frame.
  • Provide vaccinations and document as required in EHR and online registries such as ShowMeVax.
  • Assists with Pre-Visit planning documentation and attends huddles daily.
  • Ability to work an occasional Saturday and evenings as requested.
  • Assist with other areas and duties as assigned.

Communication/Interpersonal:

  • Act as a patient advocate.
  • Communicates patient’s health status accurately in verbal and written reports to appropriate health care providers (i.e. Charge Nurse, providers).
  • Communicates effectively, courteously and collaboratively with patient, providers, supervisors, and co-workers.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.

Referral Duties:

  • Assists referral specialist with referral duties as assigned.  Obtains medical information after completion of a referral and performs all required documentation. 
  • Assists with patient paperwork to send referral information to Health Center referral partners such as TMC, Diagnostic Imaging, Metrocare, WYJOCare and physicians who provide consultation to Health Center patients.
  • Ensure that the appropriate internal/external providers, facilities and ancillary services are utilized in the referral process.
  • Document all referrals in EHR.
  • Print and mail/fax referrals/authorizations to providers and facilities at the time the provider is contacted.
  • Answer phones and maintain documentation, and files as needed.

Safety/Risk Management:

  • Adheres to health center safety, infection control and hazardous waste procedures.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

General Employee Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate volunteer assignments according to Clinic needs.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement processes and activities in the organization.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Provide orientation and training to new volunteers, students and employees as assigned.
  • Assist in the development, acquisition and evaluation of patient education materials.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

  • Requires long periods of standing
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 35 pounds.
  • Requires ability to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and reach.
  • Requires ability to use routine office equipment such as computer and telephone.
  • Requires ability to comprehend both oral and written communications.
  • Requires sufficient near-vision to be able to read document and computer screen.
  • OSHA Category 1: All procedures or other job-related tasks involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues or a potential for spills or splashes of these fluids.
  • HIPAA Classification: Unrestricted Access: A workforce member with unrestricted access will have full access to patient’s protected health information, including the patient’s entire medical record, for patient care purposes.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Minimum one year of satisfactory work performance in a community health or family practice setting.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain Basic Life Support Certification.
  • Ability to relate to a broad and diverse spectrum of the community.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks.
  • Ability to understand and present verbal instructions and to exchange verbal information.
  • Ability to work in a professional manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, courteous working relationships with patients, coworkers and others.
  • Ability to work in Windows based computer environment.
  • Ability to work evenings is preferred.
