Database Administrator

Job Description
The Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI), a national leader in visual arts and design education, is seeking applications for the full-time position of Database Administrator.  KCAI offers an exceptional benefits vacation and holiday package for full-time staff including 100% employer paid insurance and a 5% retirement match for eligible participants.
The Database Administrator has a primary focus on managing various systems and applications that support the core information systems at the Kansas City Art Institute. The DBA is  responsible for maintaining campus administrative databases and related servers, identifying data requirements, and supporting end users. The successful candidate will be able to integrate data from external sources into the database to support data-informed decision making and work closely with relevant departments to develop efficient processes to extract, transform, and share data including stored procedures and related scripting.
  • Manage KCAI’s Jenzabar J1/JICS software and systems
  • Manage all KCAI database systems including Microsoft SQL Server, PowerFaids, NetPartner, Access, and Paperstore
  • Monitor and maintain database system integrity and security in line with KCAI policies and guidelines
  • Manage database integrations for the various platforms in use at KCAI, i.e. Slate/Jenzabar.
  • Database report writing functions including:
    • Analyzing tables in the Jenzabar J1 database to establish knowledge of data for accurate retrieval and use in report writing
    • Utilize available tools such as SQL, Infomaker, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel and Izenda to provide reports for campus departments
    • Demonstrate outstanding communication skills to translate reporting requests in order to accurately meet the information and deadline needs of users
    • Collaborate with end users to gather report requirements and ensure proper testing and validation
  • Host monthly Jenzabar Module owners meeting to discuss data flow and needs between departments
  • Train and/or facilitate outside training for users on the Jenzabar J1 product line
  • Troubleshoot and correct issues as they arise
  • Create and maintain accounts for all users and assign applicable permissions and  security levels
  • Provide end-to-end technical support and problem resolution
  • Develop and test new features for existing applications or new applications to better support the needs of KCAI
  • Deliver assigned projects and task which meet end user requirements on time and on budget
  • Create database management procedures
  • Evaluate data analysis models and procedures
  • Excellent communication skills and customer service skills with the proven ability to understand and translate user needs
  • 3+ years of work experience as a DBA, managing database technology systems and applications
  • Proven experience in supporting a mission critical database technology environment
  • Knowledge of database design and theory
  • Working knowledge of Jenzabar and Microsoft SQL Server and a proven ability to learn new technologies and use that knowledge effectively
  • General understanding of routine maintenance, recovery, and handling failover of a database
  • Basic understanding of disaster recovery and database backup procedures
  • Good problem solving, analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Experience with deploying and managing applications
  • Experience managing user accounts and permissions
  • Experience assisting users with initial set up and training in various applications
  • Familiarity with reporting tools
  • Experience and knowledge in higher education institutions preferred
  • Ability to work with a high level of confidential information with an attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and problem solve effectively
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and assistance
  • Must be able to deal with multitasking stress and a continuous flow of needed responses
  • Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in an IT related discipline or an equivalent combination of work experience and education.
