GIS Intern

Posted: 08/30/2024

BikeWalkKC is looking for a GIS intern in our Community Planning program for the Fall 2024 Semester. This is a unique opportunity for a student of urban planning or related disciplines to gain work experience in the nonprofit sector with a mission-based social enterprise.

Status: Part-time, temporary, exempt
Reports to: Director of Community Planning
Located at: 1106 East 30th Street in Midtown Kansas City, MO, hybrid, in person or virtual
Compensation: $12 per hour, number of hours to be determined with the selected intern based on their academic requirements.
Posted: August 30th, 2024 - open until filled
Start date: As soon as possible and to be determined with the selected intern.

Overall Description: BikeWalkKC’s GIS Intern will support a range of projects that support our vision for a connected network of city streets that provide people with public spaces for transportation, recreation, physical activity, access to nature, and connections between housing, jobs, and education. The GIS Intern will assist in building support for this vision primarily through making high quality maps and/or graphics that bring community engagement feedback to life. This position will report to the Director of Community Planning.

This is a great opportunity for someone interested in the fields of urban planning, community engagement, GIS, environmental science, public policy, advocacy, education, and more. The Community Planning program is currently engaged in a wide range of planning studies that the GIS Intern would provide support on. The most pressing need is for map making support for an Active Transportation Plan for a community in northeast Missouri. This individual would work with existing conditions analysis, survey data, and community feedback to help create maps that illustrate recommended locations for future improvements to the bicycle and pedestrian built environment. Examples of our recent planning products are online at https://bikewalkkc.org/planning/projects/

Things can change quickly as grants become available and/or BikeWalkKC receives a contract to perform work. There are opportunities for this role to expand beyond GIS work if that’s of interest to the candidate.
