Job Title: Urban Planning Intern

Location: Kansas City, MO

Position Type: Part-time: 15-20 hours per week

The Waldo Area Business Association (WABA) has been promoting a strong business network in the Waldo neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri since 1965. Waldo is one of Kansas City’s oldest and most distinctive neighborhoods which features incredible diversity in nearly every category. WABA works collaboratively with property owners, businesses, residents, and local governments to implement initiatives aimed at fostering a thriving community. WABA provides for the interests of hundreds of local businesses through support and advocacy and is looking for a talented candidate to join our team!
Position Overview: We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Urban Planning Intern to join our team. This paid part-time internship position offers an exciting opportunity for a student or recent graduate to gain hands-on experience in urban planning and community development while contributing to meaningful projects in the Waldo area.
Duration: This internship can last 3-6 months with the possibility of hiring for a permanent part-time position at the end of the term.
Responsibilities:
  • Assist with research, data collection, and analysis related to urban planning, land use, zoning regulations, and community development.
  • Support the development and implementation of community engagement initiatives, including event planning, stakeholder outreach, and public meeting facilitation.
  • Contribute to the preparation of materials, reports, and presentations for board meetings, community workshops, and other events.
  • Conduct site visits and field assessments to gather information and assess community needs and assets.
  • Collaborate with staff, stakeholders, and external partners to support the planning and implementation of projects and initiatives.
  • Provide administrative support as needed, including document management, meeting coordination, and other tasks to support our operations.
 Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in urban planning, geography, public administration, or related field.
  • Strong interest in urban planning, community development, and local government.
  • Excellent research, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Availability to work 15-20 hours per week, with flexibility to accommodate occasional evening or weekend events.
