Job Description

The University of Missouri-Kansas City seeks a dynamic Chief Marketing Strategist to lead the development of the university's overarching marketing and branding initiatives. This is a director level position that reports directly to the Vice Chancellor of Strategic Marketing and Communications. The Chief Marketing Strategist plans and oversees the successful execution of marketing strategies in support of the university's mission goals to achieve enrollment growth, student retention and positive brand reputation in support of its student success, research and philanthropy. This leader also must have excellent relationship-building skills to manage an extensive network of campus partners as well as ad agencies, marketing sponsors and a variety of other vendors and/or community partners.
 

This leader also is a member of the Strategic Marketing and Communications leadership team charged with providing strategic leadership for the work of the entire division. MCom consists of four functional groups: marketing, strategic communications, web/digital and creative services that provide strategic communications solutions and support for the entire campus.

 

In addition to managing UMKC-wide marketing strategy, this position:

  • Supervises a robust team of direct and indirect reports who conduct strategic marketing support and project management with key academic and support units at UMKC.
  • Serves as UMKC’s key brand manager, working in close partnership with the VC and the Creative Director.
  • Oversees licensing and trademark work.
  • Manages the university’s marketing spend, so must have facility in Excel and managing to budget.
  • Oversees and manages marketing sponsors and community partners.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 6 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary


Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in marketing, business, journalism, communication or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years marketing experience, including senior manager level experience in leading a marketing team.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and collaborate with senior leadership and functional departments; effective communication and collaboration with various stakeholders.
  • Proven track-record of establishing short- and long-term marketing goals, then executing operating plans to achieve them.  Ability to manage change within a dynamic environment and rapidly changing field.
  • Prior experience in building the marketing and brand impact of an organization, assuring its reach extends beyond its current market.
  • Ability to recommend and implement marketing tools to track success and return on investment, providing frequent reports on activities and outcomes to executive leadership
  • Knowledgeable in market research and using enrollment or other data to define marketing strategy and messaging segmentation for successful campaigns
  • Strong project management experience.

  • Serve as a trusted source of the University’s marketing strategies, methods and tools.
 

Salary

Up to $95,000, commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity.

Salary Range: $75,000 - 99,999
