Communications Specialist

Storyteller Wanted.  Join the Olathe Public Schools Foundation's team and help us meet the needs of Olathe students and educators. This position is responsible for producing compelling content that supports effective communication across multiple platforms including, but not limited to, website, social media, e-newsletters, print, and multimedia production. The Communications Specialist assists with the development of and maintains OPSF marketing plans and ensures that OPSF tools and channels are effective and current.

POSITION TITLE: Communications Specialist
DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Olathe Public Schools Foundation
HOURS OF WORK/CALENDAR: 8 Hour Daily/ 242 Calendar Days Yearly
STATUS: Classified - Non-Exempt, Full Time
POSITION SUMMARY:  The Communications Specialist position provides support to the Olathe Public Schools Foundation (OPSF) to deliver clear and concise messaging for internal and external audiences, in alignment with the OPSF strategic plan. This position is part of the OPSF staff and reports to the OPSF Executive Director. 


  • Promote and inform the community about the OPSF through creation and delivery of effective and timely communication using print, digital and social media channels
  • Write, edit and proofread digital and print communication materials for accuracy, consistency, clarity and style
  • Develop messaging, talking points, newsletters, video scripts, social media posts, and other necessary communication materials as assigned
  • Prepare and execute through communication vehicles OPSF story ideas and biweekly news articles
  • Coordinate production of OPSF printed materials
  • Edit and proofread communication materials for accuracy, consistency, clarity, and style.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of public relations initiatives.
  • Support OPSF special events including, but not limited to the Taste of the Town, Women’s Giving Circle, Annual Golf Tournament, New Educator Reception and Annual Autumn Breakfast.
  • Photograph OPSF events and activities for use in OPSF materials.
  • Analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of communication efforts and make suggestions for improvement
  • Assist in the coordination of all employee recognition awards and planning of recognition activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality of materials and information
  • Support the OPSF staff in meeting all goals and implementation tasks and perform other additional duties or tasks as designated by the supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or related field; or a minimum of 4 years work experience in a substantially similar role.
  • Must possess a minimum of 2 years work experience or equivalent training in communications performing substantially similar essential functions.
  • Demonstrates proficiency using social media platforms and software
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrates proficient and compelling written and verbal communications skills
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate in small or large groups and mass communication channels  
  • Demonstrates proficient writing and scripting skills and the ability to effectively and compellingly present in writing the OPSF’s investment in the schools and staff.
  • Demonstrates intermediate proficiency using common software programs including but not limited to MS Office Suite, InDesign, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Demonstrates proficient knowledge and skill in the effective use and application of office and publication technology, photographic equipment and software, internet, and video technology
  • Exhibits an effective understanding of “customer-centered” support and the ability to establish effective working relationships at all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated experience in current technologies used in communication, including website, video production and editing, graphic design, photo editing.
  • Proficient graphic design skills and diverse writing skills for multiple platforms
  • Proficient knowledge of social media platforms and understanding of current digital communication trends
  • Demonstrates flexibility to work with others in a variety of circumstances.
  • Self-motivated with a positive and professional attitude that contributes to a positive and fun work culture.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of discretion and confidentiality regarding OPSF, district and employee information.
  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively, exercise judgment and creativity, and skill to organize work, set priorities, and meet deadlines.

Job Type: Full Time

Salary Range: $30,000 - 49,999
