Show Me KC Schools is a nonprofit organization with a mission to help families make well-informed decisions about their students’ education by providing vital information about the school options available. The idea for Show Me KC Schools grew from a group of concerned parents with school-aged children who were committed to living in Kansas City, Missouri and eager to find the right education for their children in an unusually complicated school landscape. We are a neutral organization (not affiliated with any one school or district) and have grown to offer a variety of programs for Kansas Citians including the only city-wide school fair, school tours, one-on-one navigation, our thriving website and SchoolAppKC – a common application for many of our schools. We’re a one-stop shop to help families get started on finding the right school for their children.
 
Position Summary
Show Me KC Schools’ Director of Marketing & Communications reports to the Executive Director and is primarily responsible for the creation and implementation of our nonprofit’s day-to-day marketing tactics and overarching marketing strategy, including management of our online and printed school guides, as well as our social media, newsletters and digital and print marketing for our multiple programs. Our ideal candidate is driven by the vision that all Kansas City residents have confidence in their school options.
 
Primary Responsibilities
 
Manage Online School Guide
  • Work closely with Show Me KC Schools’ web development firm on the development of all new website content, tools and design, based on latest school choice platform trends, nationally and locally.
  • Frequently update and expand school information and events on Show Me KC Schools’ website.
  • Research appropriate parent education content to add to the site and assist with the development and the delivery of content as both articles and videos.
  • Monitor activity and effectiveness of website through Google Analytics and share regular reports and recommendations on website performance.
  • Liaise with all schools in the KCPS boundaries to collect critical school information for our website, in addition to providing small group and one-on-one tutorials on how schools can log-in and update their individual profile pages.
 
Develop & Distribute the Printed School Guide
  • Lead the development and information collection necessary for the physical publication of the annual printed school guide in the summer/fall 2019
  • Identify partners to assist with the distribution of the guide
  • Work with graphic designer on the layout and design of the school guide
  • Manage publication and distribution of the guide
Serve as Primary Media Liaison
  • Develop relationships with key media for expansion of media opportunities.
  • Write press releases and serve as the press contact
Create Collateral for Events
  • In collaboration with our graphic design consultant, create print materials for our multiple programs, including school tours, workshops, school fair and SchoolAppKC
  • Implement strategy for the dissemination of printed materials to early childhood centers, schools and partner organizations
Oversee Digital Communications
  • Produce monthly e-newsletters
  • Generate daily posts on Show Me KC Schools’ social media accounts
  • Establish and maintain strong partnerships with schools in Kansas City, local businesses, city representatives, and neighborhood and community organizations
  • Capture quotes from program participants and write occasional human-interest stories for online presence and fundraising efforts
  • Supporting programs and events
  • Other duties and projects as assigned. 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master's degree, preferred
  • 5 + years’ experience marketing or related field
  • Passionate about K-12 school opportunities for children and youth in Kansas City
  • Knowledgeable about school choice issues in Kansas City
  • Highly skilled in the use of WordPress
  • Strong knowledge of Google Analytics
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to interface with and engage diverse groups of parents, community members and school leaders.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and take on new projects as assigned
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team
  • Highly creative
  • Highly flexible
  • Ability to work at nights and on weekends, on occasion
