PART-TIME MARKETING AND MERCHANDISING MANAGER

 Green Works in Kansas City is an award-winning nonprofit founded in 2007. We work to empower urban youth to care for the environment, contribute to our economy, and create healthy communities. To develop Kansas City's future sustainable leaders, we offer high-quality programming that includes environmental science, outdoor experiences, service projects, career exploration, workplace training and paid real-world work experiences.
 
We are seeking a motivated individual to serve as a part-time marketing and merchandising manager for Green Works, and our retail store, The Perennial Bee. The manager will work closely with the executive director, the program manager for high school programs, and the program director. The marketing and merchandising manager will be responsible for designing and implementing a comprehensive marketing plan for Green Works and the store, staffing the store during open hours, sourcing products and managing inventory, and teaching marketing and merchandising lessons to the high school students in our sustainable business program.  The position begins as soon as a qualified candidate is identified.

Qualifications Required

  • Passion for urban youth, sustainability, and community building
  • Marketing and design experience including strong familiarity with current trends in social media platforms
  • Ensure consistency and build the brand and image of the Green Works organization and The Perennial Bee retail store
  • At least four years of retail experience that includes marketing and merchandising responsibilities
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong writing skills
  • Comfortable with numbers and a basic or better proficiency with spreadsheets
  • Working knowledge with desk-top publishing programs such as the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple details
  • Flexible, adaptable, professional and calm problem-solver

Qualifications Preferred
  • Undergraduate degree in Marketing, Business, Communication, or other relevant field
  • Experience working with high school youth
  • Varied for-profit and nonprofit work experience
  • Strong connections in the Kansas City business community 
Primary Responsibilities
  • Design a comprehensive marketing plan for Green Works and The Perennial Bee. Implement the plan including content creation, social media postings and student involvement
  • Work all open hours of the store (currently First Friday weekends but could expand in the spring of 2022), and schedule additional staff and volunteers as needed
  • Participate in shared office hours scheduled once/week
  • Design and teach several marketing and merchandising lessons to the high school students in the Green Works Lab sustainable business program
  • Research and recommend new products for the store
  • Manage inventory and the re-ordering process
  • Design a donation plan to solicit high-end merchandise from supporters
  • Coordinate and manage all aspects of merchandise donations, price and arrange chosen items for display, often with student involvement
  • Work with the ED on exterior signage
  • Keep store, workroom, restroom and exterior entries clean and organized
  • Miscellaneous logistical items include watering plants, setting out sandwich board signs and outdoor decorations, managing petty cash, and training volunteers on the Square system
Compensation and hours
The Marketing and Merchandising Manager is a contract position compensated at a rate of $20-$24/hr. depending on experience.  The target start date is January 2022 or before. The hourly estimate is 8 - 15 hours/week during the 45 weeks of yearly programming.*
 
* No programming takes place the week of Thanksgiving, from mid-December through the first week of January, the week of spring break and typically a few weeks in late May/early June between the end of spring programming, and the beginning of summer programming.  Hours will be at the higher end of the range during First Friday weeks.
