New Roots Sales Manager

Position:          New Roots Sales Manager        
FLSA:               Exempt
Reports to: Director of Farm Programs
Hours:              Full-time, 40 hours per week
Mon-Fri, occasional evening or weekend work, as needed
Rate: $50,000-$55,000
Benefits: Health benefits package includes employer paid medical, dental, vision, life, long-term disability insurance, EAP, and 403(b) retirement plan option.
Time off: Four PTO days usable at start, two weeks of vacation accrued during first year increasing to three weeks at year two.
Paid holidays: Holidays include New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day after, and the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

 
Position Summary:
Cultivate KC’s New Roots program is a four-year farm incubator that provides land, training, and market access to refugee and New American farmers as they launch and grow independent farm businesses.
The Sales Manager oversees all New Roots sales operations and works closely with the Juniper Gardens Training Farm (JGTF) Program Manager to align sales, production, and training goals. This role manages sales logistics, customer relationships, and data systems while training and supervising farmers participating in the CSA learning track.


Essential Functions & Responsibilities
 
Sales Management – 40%

  • Manage all sales streams, including CSA farm share, wholesale, and farmers market support.
  • Recruit and maintain relationships with CSA members, wholesale buyers, and other customers.
  • Create annual CSA and wholesale plan with support of Farmer Trainer Specialist.
  • Coordinate weekly CSA and wholesale logistics including order communication, produce collection, aggregation, packing, and delivery.
  • Maintain inventory and regular ordering of sales and market supplies for program use.
  • Oversee sales tracking systems and payments to farmers and ensure all data is accurate for reporting and grant needs.
  • Develop and/or implement sales-related SOPs.
 
Farmer Training & Support – 40%
  • Provide training and one-on-one technical assistance to farmers on CSA and wholesale processes, including packing standards, delivery expectations, and use of CSA management platform, Local Food Marketplace.
  • Recruit and supervise farmers in CSA learning track.
  • Facilitate workshops and collaborate with Farm Funding Specialist to develop educational materials on sales, finance, and business topics.
  • Coordinate and schedule farm-to-table field trips for farmers.
  • Collaborate with the JGTF Program Manager to ensure curriculum is up to date, culturally responsive, and aligned with participant needs.
Program Operations – 20%
  • Work closely with the Director of Farm Programs and JGTF Program Manager to align production, sales, and program goals.
  • Contribute to annual program planning and help shape long-term sales and market development strategies for New Roots.
  • With the JGTF Program Manager, conduct end-of-year evaluations for farmers, addressing conflict resolution and disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Manage sales program budget in coordination with the Director of Farm Programs and Director of Finance & Administration.
  • Submit expense documentation (check requests, invoices, reimbursements) and track program finances.
  • Contribute to grant development, collect data for reporting, and prepare board reports.
  • Support the creation of public-facing program content (blog posts, updates, stories).
  • Other duties as assigned.
Placement Criteria
  • Minimum three years of experience in agriculture sales and/or small business development, or a combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Minimum two years of experience in people management.
  • Knowledge of organic farming and sustainable agriculture practices.
  • Experience in local food and/or restaurant industry a plus.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and clean driving record; personal car insurance and reliable vehicle required.
  • Strong communication skills with diverse audiences, including farmers, customers, partners, staff, and board members.
  • Experience with cross-cultural communication or working with non-native English speakers preferred.
  • Commitment to building long-term relationships through mentorship and support.
  • Excellent facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Self-directed and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient in computer use and adaptable to learning new software.
  • Team-oriented, collaborative, and eager to learn from others.

Physical Demands
 
This position requires typical physical demands for farm and food industry labor, such as walking, standing, reaching, stooping, squatting, lifting up to 50 lbs and working indoors and outdoors in cold, hot, or wet conditions. Ability to navigate rugged and uneven farm terrain is required.

Work Location
 
This position works onsite at Juniper Gardens Training Farm at 100 Richmond Ave, KCK 66101. Local travel is required. Office work can be completed at Cultivate KC’s office space at 1017 N 6th St, KCK 66101 and at Cultivate KC’s main office at 4049 Pennsylvania Ave #206, KCMO 64111. Some work can be performed remotely; guidance will be provided after hiring.
