BikeWalkKC is looking for 2-3 people to fill a new role as “ambassadors” to help get more people walking and biking in neighborhoods where we are engaged in transportation equity programs and activities. This work supports underserved neighborhoods that experience a range of disparities and disinvestments in transportation, infrastructure, recreation, health, air quality, safety, and economic development. This is a part-time, seasonal opportunity starting immediately and lasting until August 31st, 2019.

Compensation: $13 per hour

EXPECTATIONS:

1. Training

  • Complete approximately 8 hours of training to learn about BikeWalkKC’s campaigns, programs, projects, events, and goals
  • Develop a working knowledge of local bike and pedestrian policies, plans, projects, and activities that impact your neighborhood

2. Activities

  • Learn about local needs
  • Explain relevant city plans and policies with neighbors and community groups
  • Share information about BikeWalkKC programs, projects, and events that can serve neighborhood needs
  • Collect contact information at all meetings and events
  • Collect stories with potential to be shared on BikeWalkKC and partner blogs and social media
  • Provide content to organizations, businesses, local centers of faith, and schools about bicycling programs and events to include in their newsletters

3. Events

  • Attend neighborhood association meetings
  • Attend and speak at public meetings and forums related to walking, biking, and transit infrastructure, plans, or policies
  • Identify interested individuals and groups from neighborhood organizations, faith communities, businesses, schools and other institutions
  • Assist BikeWalkKC’s Education, Planning, and Bike Share teams with programs and events in your neighborhood

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with one or more of the following neighborhoods: Ivanhoe, Key Coalition, Center City, Squier Park, Hyde Park, Paseo West, Blue Hills, or Town Fork Creek
  • Currently reside in one of the program neighborhoods listed above, or have resided there within the last three years
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse people of all ages, abilities, cultural groups, sexual orientation, gender identities, economic status, etc.
  • Ability to be persistent, professional, and creative when promoting active transportation
  • Ability to interact and communicate with people in a way that is appropriate for them and their lives
  • Comfortable presenting information to and engaging large groups
  • Problem-solving skills, creativity, flexibility and self-motivation
  • Experience with walking and biking in the city, or willingness to learn
  • Punctuality and good attendance

Our ambassadors are a new, important element of our work to engage with local communities where walking or biking might be helpful to achieve neighborhood goals for transportation, health, recreation, physical activity, and more. BikeWalkKC offers a wide variety of services that include adult bicycle education and encouragement, school-based Safe Routes to School programs and technical assistance, bike and scooter sharing, advocacy, public policy, urban planning, and more.

BikeWalkKC’s neighborhood-based work seeks to first listen to local concerns and issues, and then work with residents to plan and design solutions where our services and programs can be helpful to their goals. Ambassadors are a primary point of contact between BikeWalkKC and their neighborhood.
