Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist

Our program is growing, The Family Conservancy seeks multiple full time Early Childhood Mental Health Specialists.

Summary of Position

Works in collaboration with early childhood staff and families to improve their ability to prevent, identify, treat and reduce the impact of mental health problems among children prenatal to age six. Works in cooperation with community child care providers and other disciplines to provide infant and early childhood mental health consultation to improve the capacity of providers and families to support social and emotional development. Provides mental health training, social emotional assessments and referrals, staff support and provision of appropriate consultation services. Supports the program's overall goals and objectives; represents The Family Conservancy and the mental health profession in a positive and professional manner.

Essential Job Results

Consults with partner staff or parents as needed in developing practices that support social emotional development of children enrolled in program. Collaborates with partner site staff and parents to implement strategies to support best practices for early childhood social/emotional wellness. Provides coaching and support to implement strategies and promote mental health in classrooms and homes.

Conducts classroom and individual child observations to support social/emotional development of children and builds capacity of staff and families to address challenging behavior.

Assists families in identifying community resources that are available to support mental health, as needed. Maintain a working knowledge of community resources by developing informal and formal relationships with community agencies that support services for children and families to ensure integration of mental health services and referrals, and to support consultation provided to partner sites.

Maintains applicable documentation, data collection and completes all required paperwork in a timely and organized manner, according to The Family Conservancy policies and procedures.

Provides classroom as well as child or family-centered consultation to address factors that contribute to an individual child's difficulties in functioning well in the early childhood setting. Collaborates with staff, interdisciplinary teams, program management and parents/guardians as needed to develop and implement individualized behavior support plans for children to support social emotional development and address mental health concerns within the early childhood setting. Provides referrals to community providers for mental health follow up when necessary, and provide support for parents/guardians in pursuing resources available.

Performs data collection and reporting to ensure appropriate services are provided for children and families.

On an ongoing basis, collaborates with community partners to ensure integration of mental health services and referrals, and to support consultation provided to partner sites.

Supports the procedures and timeline outlined for the completion of social emotional screenings including scoring, reviewing results, sharing results with partner sites and parents, and contacting parents for follow up on any concerns that are identified.

"Work with Program Management to identify areas of need with regards to training and technical assistance. In response to identified needs, provides technical assistance, shares educational materials and conducts trainings in the areas of mental well-being, social emotional development, and challenging behaviors. 

 Provide trainings to child care professionals and coordinate with other staff at The Family Conservancy to provide parenting classes to families at child development sites."

Immediately reports safety concerns and potential hazards identified to the Early Childhood Mental Health Manager.


Effectively utilize agency technology to accomplish tasks. (Microsoft Office Suite; Google Mail, Calendar & Drive; program specific software; printers/scanners/fax/phone).

Supports The Family Conservancy’s Strategic Plan and ensures accountability through successful implementation of assigned objectives where applicable.

As part of our Performance and Quality Improvement (PQI) process, attends assigned meetings and contributes in a meaningful way.

Maintains confidentiality of all agency information, consumer nonpublic personal information (NPI) and personal health information (PHI), as well as records directly or indirectly identifying any per­son currently or formerly receiving services from The Family Conservancy.

Maintains professional standards and technical knowledge in infant and early childhood mental health and research through attendance at educational workshops and reviewing professional publications. Informs staff and colleagues of the results of these activities.

Attends diversity training yearly. Application of knowledge will demonstrate awareness of the wide spectrum of socioeconomic, ethnic, racial and personal lifestyles/cultures found within the service populations. Employees are expected to apply knowledge gained from diversity training and to act in a sensitive, nondiscriminatory, professional manner.

Accepts and uses supervision, direction, and consultation to maximize available resources in the completion of work duties.

Additional responsibilities will be assigned as needed to maintain and improve effective functioning of the department and to advance the mission of the organization.

Reporting Relationships and Principal Contacts

Reports to the ECMH Manager or assigned assistant manager. Principal contacts include other agency staff, home-visitors, voluntary consumers, and other social service agencies.

• Position requires off-site work; individual must have access to transportation. Travel throughout the metropolitan area and counties within the service delivery area is required.

• Employment is contingent upon successful clearance of Criminal, Kansas & Missouri Child/Elder Abuse and Neglect, and Sex Offender background investigations.


• Position involves extensive use of computer, telephone, fax and copy machines.

• Must have manual dexterity and experience to perform handwritten paperwork, recordkeeping, and filing.

• Occasional weekend and/or evening work may be necessary

• As an employee providing direct service, must be free from tuberculosis.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Master's degree in Social Work or related field required.

Licensed professional required. (e.g. LMSW, LPC, LCP)

Minimum one year prior professional experience providing services to infants, toddlers and preschool age children and their families required.

Written and verbal communication skills required to interact with health professionals, vendors and agencies in a professional manner, developing rapport and enhancing business relationships required.

Working knowledge of community resources required.


Individual must:

• Possess ability to work with families in a supportive manner throughout the assessment and referral processes.

• Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

• Possesses knowledge of infant/early childhood development.

• Possess excellent oral and written communications skills. Demonstrated teaching/training skills.

• Develop rapport with consumers including early learning center staff, children and parents.

• Be open to change and considerable variety in work environments. Adjust to new or changing situations and unexpected events.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Prior relevant work experience with low income and diverse populations in a community or other relevant setting preferred.

Bilingual fluency in written and oral English/Spanish preferred.

Prior experience with Conscious Discipline preferred.

Working knowledge of community resources preferred.
