The Lawrence Humane Society is seeking a dynamic volunteer coordination and community outreach professional to design, plan, and manage a vibrant volunteer program and community outreach initiatives at our quickly expanding animal welfare organization and shelter in Lawrence, Kansas. Teaming with an energetic and talented staff and a strong board of directors,the Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator (VOC) will create sustainable and engaging opportunities and programs to recruit, train and retain volunteers as well as community outreach programs and events.

The Lawrence Humane Society (LHS) is an open-admission animal shelter that provides shelter for lost, abandoned and homeless pets and 24-hour daily rescue for injured stray animals. We investigate allegations of animal abuse and cruelty and work closely with local law enforcement to prosecute offenders. Over 4,500 animals are admitted to our shelter every year.

Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator

Classification: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Community Programs Manager

Salary: $13.28/hour + (depending on experience and qualifications)

Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday, 9:00am-6:00pm (some evenings and additional days required)

Position Summary:

The volunteer and outreach coordinator (VOC) provides strategic direction for the volunteer and outreach functions of the agency. S/he will partner closely with the community programs manager (CPM) and director of development and community engagement (DOD) to build a solid and sustainable volunteer program, create and execute outreach and engagement programs in the community and the shelter, and will act as a liaison between community partners, volunteers and LHS. S/he will oversee and coordinate all volunteer functions with off-site adoption events, fundraising events, and other projects. S/he will support the DOD’s role in developing communications in order to drive broad awareness and visibility for the organization’s important work in the community and the CPM’s role in the development of strategic and sustainable programs that position LHS as a resource to an expanding segment of the public. S/he will oversee the volunteer program in order to enhance program delivery and engage volunteers effectively.

The VM reports to the CPM and supervises all LHS volunteers. The VM will provide support and professional recommendations to the CPM and DOD.
