“Blue River,” an Award-Winning Documentary Now Available on YouTube
Public Invited to Submit Community Stories about the Blue River.
“Blue River” documentary film featuring oral histories and the ecological and cultural history of the river can now be viewed on Heartland Conservation Alliance’s YouTube channel.

Filmed in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and English Landing Films, the film won a Mid-America Regional Emmy Award for Public/Current/Community Affairs – Program/Special in November 2020.

The documentary premiered on KCPTV in January 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, HCA hosted monthly virtual screenings last year called “Monday Movie Nights” where viewers joined filmmaker Michael Price and other panelists to discuss conservation and environmental issues. “Blue River” was made in conjunction with the Renew the Blue Campaign, which aspires to bring attention to the river, its needs, and the many organizations working to improve it.

Drawing inspiration from the film, Heartland Conservation Alliance is now accepting submissions for The Blue River Story Project highlighting the unique stories of communities connected to the Blue River. Submissions can be in a variety of forms and will be showcased at HCA’s Annual Partnership Summit in Fall 2021. Submissions will be accepted March – August 2021. Go to for more information about how to submit. For more details, contact Sarah Benal, Education and Outreach Coordinator, at 816-349-9201 or
