About Us
As a Missouri 501(c)(3) organization, A. Lois Hightower-Jackson Inc.'s (ALHJ) mission is to award scholarships to outstanding high school seniors who reside within the Kansas City metropolitan area.
ALHJ, formed in 2022 in memory of the corporation’s namesake, and celebrates a woman who was a mother, a grandmother, and known for her tireless work ethic throughout both her church and educational community. Her fervent dedication was exemplary of a woman who not only openly and continuously encourages youth but also of a woman who does the work and actively fundraises to assist youth in their efforts to achieve a higher education.
A. Lois Hightower-Jackson Inc. announced its first scholarship recipients at a Gates Bar-B-Q banquet in April, 2023. ALHJ Board President, Leo Jackson, was pleased with the first year’s outcome, stating that these outstanding high school seniors, all from the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area, were able to apply the scholarships toward their 2023-2024 studies at accredited colleges, universities, or trade schools.
In year two, ALHJ modified its application process, and, among other things, we introduced the requirement for the submission of an essay. This subject was “The Person Who Most Influenced Me to Seek a Higher Education.” A highlight of the evening was the guest appearance of Kansas City entrepreneur and civic leader, Ollie Gates, who offered his congratulations and words of encouragement.
