Foundation Director

Background: The Shawnee Indian Mission is a landmark that reflects the colorful and varied history of our region.  Built in the mid-1800s, it was the site of the first school in Kansas, a place where native and pioneer cultures came together.  It was a supply post for the wagon trains along the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon Trails.  It was the office of the first governor of the Kansas Territory and the meeting place of the first territorial legislature where the first vote on Kansas Statehood took place, which ignited ‘Bleeding Kansas’.  Later, during the Civil War, the Mission was a Union encampment and a hospital for Union soldiers during Battles of Westport and Big Blue.

Today this verdant 12-acre site features three of the oldest buildings in Kansas and is the largest green space in northeast Johnson County.
