Missouri Valley Special Collections - Librarian / Archivist
Under the direction of the Missouri Valley Special Collections manager, the Special Collections Librarian/Archivist organizes, describes, preserves, and makes accessible to users archival materials, including historical documents, photographs, maps, and other records. Provides reference service to researchers in person and by email and telephone, develops both in-person and virtual presentations and exhibitions, and contributes content to the department’s website and social media accounts.
This is a full-time exempt position with a starting salary of $50,382, with excellent benefits. Position is open until filled.
Schedule
Monday - Friday: 8:30 am - 5 pm.
One Saturday and / or Sunday shift per month or more if required.
Location
Central Library: 14 W 10th Street, KCMO, 64105.
Job Duties (Essential Functions)
- Performs archival processing (preservation, arrangement, and description) of historical materials and collections according to established standards and best practices.
- Provides reference service to researchers and instruction in accessing MVSC collections and resources.
- Promotes department resources and educates users through presentations and tutorials.
- Contributes content (e.g., articles, research guides) for publication to KCHistory.org.
- Prepares exhibits and other interpretive products featuring MVSC’s collections.
- Maintains effective, courteous working relationships with all library staff and customers.
- Keeps abreast of current trends and technologies in the library/archives profession.
- Ability to interact with staff and public and work in a team environment
- Proficient in the principles and practices of archival processing and preservation
- Knowledge of historical and genealogical research methods
- Knowledge of digital resources used in libraries, such as online catalogs, e-content, and research databases
- Meet deadlines and balance multiple projects
- Work independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Flexibility to work some weekend shifts
- Ability to speak and understand English is required, additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages spoken in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.
Required Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in library science or history with an archives studies concentration, or the equivalent combination of education and applicable archives experience.
- Must have a working knowledge of archival arrangement and standards. Knowledge of Kansas City history preferred, but not required.
Work Environment
Work is performed at the Missouri Valley Special Collections located on the 5th floor of the Central Library. Workspace is shared with co-workers and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.
