The American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) is a not-for-profit association comprised of 63 Member Boards dedicated to veterinary medicine’s proper and efficient regulation. About the Role

Position Summary: The Communications Specialist crafts clear, compelling messaging across internal and external channels. This role focuses on development, coordination and implementation of multi-media marketing and communications strategies to further develop awareness, encourage stakeholder engagement, inform the public, and promote a positive organizational image.

Responsibilities

Day-to-day activities include:

  • Collaborate within the marketing & communications team on strategy and tactics
  • Develop internal communications strategies and content (e.g., newsletters, announcements)
  • Write content for various marketing efforts including social media, PPT presentations, collateral material, and a robust email cadence
  • Manage brand voice and tone across all communication platforms
  • Analyze the effectiveness of marketing & communications efforts and make changes to improve performance
  • Monitor project timelines to ensure on-time completion
  • Perform light graphic design creation for marketing and promotional purposes (Adobe Creative Cloud and/or Canva experience preferred)

The qualified candidate will possess strong marketing and communications acuity, exceptional interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, good judgment, and be an extraordinary collaborator. Excellent copywriting skills are a must. This position works closely with the Marketing & Communications Manager and Digital Content Specialist.

WITHIN 1 MONTH, YOU WILL:

  • Understand the mission, values, and strategic objectives of the AAVSB
  • Understand current marketing and communications processes, procedures, and outputs
  • Establish relationships with other departments product owners, and senior management

WITHIN 3 MONTHS, YOU WILL:

  • Understand all programs and services offered by the AAVSB
  • Establish relationships with key consultants for marketing and technology to execute marketing strategies appropriately
  • Learn about and assist with updates to website

WITHIN 6 MONTHS, YOU WILL:

  • Take complete ownership of all marketing technology and tools used to execute marketing activities, including Microsoft Office Suite (Planner), Canva, and Constant Contact
  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications Manager to evaluate all marketing and communications processes and procedures, including suggestions for improvement
  • Own their role and collaborate with internal and external customers to reach desired outcomes

 WITHIN 12 MONTHS, YOU WILL:

  • Suggest and implement improvements to marketing and communications processes and procedures
  • Effectively manage all marketing and communications technology and tools
  • Seamlessly transition in and out of all major marketing department tasks including communications, social media, website, and asset creation

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Required: Education (Associate or Bachelor’s degree) in marketing, business administration, or a related field. Two to three years experience in corporate communications, journalism, or public relations.

Preferred: Association experience. Agency/firm experience. Certified Association Executive (CAE) or other industry-specific certification.

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Strong interpersonal and media relations skills
  • Ability to translate complex topics into clear, engaging content
  • Experience with internal communications platforms and digital creation tools including Constant Contact, Microsoft Planner, and Canva
  • Adobe Creative Cloud and WordPress experience preferred but not mandatory

Occasional travel and weekend work might be necessary to fulfill the position’s responsibilities.

Details

The Marketing & Communications Specialist is a full-time and non-exempt position. Work is performed under the direction of the Marketing & Communications Manager.

Salary range: $49,000 - $53,000

The AAVSB is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. This position may be virtual/remote with the understanding that there will be required company-paid travel to Kansas City, Missouri and (potentially) other locations throughout the year.
