Communications Coordinator

Summary: Dynamic communications professional wanted to engage community! Communications Coordinator executes Metropolitan Energy Center's communications strategy. This role involves creating and managing content across various platforms, ensuring brand consistency, and supporting advocacy efforts. The Communications Coordinator works closely with department heads and program personnel to meet their communication needs and enhance audience engagement. We highly encourage creativity and storytelling.

Duration and Category: Full-time, Exempt 

Location and Travel: This position is based in Kansas City, MO, and is hybrid. MEC maintains an office space and also offers teleworking options as appropriate for the work duties and at the discretion of supervisors. Most work for this position may be completed remotely. Weekly in-office days and some in-person meetings are required. Infrequent overnight travel.

Supervisory Responsibilities: There are infrequent opportunities to supervise interns. 

Essential Duties

  1. Implement communications policies and procedures. 
  2. With content support from staff, create communications plans and media kits for major initiatives.
    • Assist in the development of internal staff training on communication strategies. 
    • Collaboratively produce concurrent communications projects from concept to completion. 
    • Research and synthesize information for timely and impactful communication. 
  3. Produce media content for day-to-day and event support as appropriate, including  
    • Design and layout print and digital materials. 
    • Social media posts, shares, and responses. 
    • Emails, blogs, press releases, and newsletters. 
    • White papers and technical reports 
    • Update web content in collaboration with IT support. 
    • Produce and edit video content to promote MEC’s initiatives. 
  4. Produce and distribute strategic communication materials aligning with MEC’s mission.
    • Annual report 
    • Donor letters, newsletters, and other communications 
    • Fundraising scripts 
  5. Event support 
    • Assist with planning for MEC events to ensure adequate time for promotion and marketing.  
    • Assist with event messaging to ensure impactful audience engagement. 
    • Produce sponsor materials and solicitation scripts 
    • Be present for events to take pictures and video for future website updates, newsletters, and promotions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Graphic Design, or a related field, or equivalent experience is preferred. 
  • Two to three years of experience in a communications role, preferably in the nonprofit or environmental sectors. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficiency in graphic design and experience with Adobe Creative Suite. 
  • Experience in digital communications, web design, content management, and video production. 
  • Understanding environmental justice and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively content that focuses on the right to a healthy environment and the protection of human rights and sustainable development.

  • Leadership Skills: Must be a proactive self-starter, able to work independently and collaboratively, with the ability to lead projects and foster a collaborative team environment. 
  • Organizing Skills: Ability to conduct multiple concurrent tasks with attention to detail and accuracy, adhering to deadlines. 
  • Industry Knowledge and Proficiency: Deep knowledge of communications, especially in nonprofit and environmental advocacy; Ability to use traditional and digital media to communicate complex messages. 
  • Language Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Ability to convey complex information clearly to diverse audiences; proficiency in a second language is a plus. 
  • Reasoning Ability: Strong analytical skills and attention to detail; Ability to solve complex problems and adapt to changing circumstances. 
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, and content management systems; Experience with data handling and internet tools. 

Salary and Benefits

Annual salary range: $47,000 – $52,500
