If we are to achieve real outcomes and positive social change in our communities, we must end the culture of scarcity that has plagued the sector for decades.  The beliefs that nonprofit organizations are not sustainable, and that their business models are fundamentally broken are not reality. Our organizations can be profitable, and they can be sustainable, all while delivering real impact. 

Our role as nonprofit leaders, philanthropists, social entrepreneurs, and board members is to ensure that people continue to have access to the programs and services that are essential to creating a more just, equitable and sustainable world. To truly lead, we need to shift from a scarcity mindset that starts from a position of weakness and insignificance, to one that starts from a position of opportunity and strength.

This customized workshop aims to change your thinking. The day starts with a keynote presentation followed by separate breakout sessions for funders and nonprofits.  We close by reconvening the two groups for a report out and concluding thoughts.

This workshop will be relevant for all nonprofit and foundation professionals, but senior leadership, executives and board members will benefit greatly from attending.

8:00 a.m. Think Money First! Presentation: For Funders and Nonprofit Professionals
Nationally recognized speaker David Greco brings this highly interactive presentation to provide nonprofit leaders with a better understanding of what it really takes to deliver great outcomes, the myths and barriers that undermine scale and impact, and how funders and nonprofits can engage in honest conversation about the real cost of delivering impact.

9:30 a.m. Break

10:00 a.m.  Think Money First! Going Deeper: Nonprofit Session
Featuring real world case studies and small group activities, this highly interactive session will help nonprofit leaders uncover and interpret the key financial information necessary to make sound businesses decisions so that the organization becomes stronger, healthier, and more sustainable. We will also engage leaders in dialogue about how to make a case for support that incorporates both programmatic needs as well as liquidity, investment and long-term financial needs.

10:00 a.m. Think Money First! Facilitated Conversation: Funder Session
Using the same case study that the nonprofit leaders will be using, we will lead a facilitated conversation with the funders on why better understanding of what it costs their grantees to deliver on mission is so critical, how to engage their grantees in conversations about full cost, and how to adapt grant making strategies to better support nonprofit sustainability and impact.

11:00 a.m. Conclusion
The two groups come back together for idea sharing and closing thoughts.

Presenter David Greco is a nationally recognized speaker, author and consultant on creating a more sustainable and effective social sector. In 2013, David founded Social Sector Partners to provide training and capacity building to funders and nonprofit organizations to develop a culture of sustainability that incorporates real cost, sustainable business and revenue models, and a focus on impact.  David and his team have trained thousands of organizations on building leadership capacity and financial health through Annenberg Alchemy, the Real Cost Project, the Neighborhood Builders Leadership Initiative and Nonprofit Finance Fund. 


Sylia Obagi, President and founder of The Generative Group, is an innovator, coalition builder and hands-on manager of philanthropic-inspired change. After more than a decade of direct experience in philanthropy, she formed the organization to help donors, private and family foundations, and social-purpose organizations maintain a deep commitment to their core values as they invest in progressive social change, and generate impact with their giving. Most recently, Sylia was the first President & CEO of the Roy & Patricia Disney Family Foundation. Prior to that, she served as the second-most-senior executive at the Annenberg Foundation for 8 years, leading the creation of Annenberg Alchemy, a capacity-building program that has served more than 2,000 nonprofit leaders and boards.
