Your Leadership Can Shape Community Radio

KKFI 90.1 FM, Kansas City's nonprofit community radio station for over 35 years, is looking for passionate community leaders to join our Board of Directors. As a board member, you will help guide the station’s mission, support independent media, and strengthen connections with Kansas City’s diverse communities.

Why join?

  • Influence the future of a station that produces 85+ weekly programs, including music, public affairs, and community-focused shows.
  • Connect with community leaders, volunteers, and local artists
  • Contribute your skills and expertise to a beloved local institution.

We welcome individuals with experience in finance, legal, marketing, fundraising, technology, or community engagement — or simply a passion for independent media.

What to Expect

As a Board member, you will:

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction for KKFI
  • Help develop and implement organizational policies
  • Oversee and safeguard the station’s financial health
  • Approve and monitor the annual budget
  • Ensure responsible stewardship of KKFI’s property and business operations

Term Commitment
Board members serve three-year terms. Elections are held at the annual meeting in early April, and service begins immediately upon election.

Monthly Meetings
The Board meets once a month for approximately two hours, typically on the fourth Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Committee Involvement
Board members actively participate in at least one committee. Committees meet monthly and play a vital role in advancing key initiatives and strategic priorities.

Financial Support
Board members are expected to make an annual financial contribution at a level that is personally meaningful. There is no minimum required amount.

Board service is both a responsibility and a rewarding opportunity to strengthen community-powered media. If you’re ready to help shape the future of KKFI, we encourage you to get involved. Find additional information and a board application form here.

OUR MISSION:
KKFI is the Kansas City area’s independent, noncommercial community radio station. We seek to stimulate, educate and entertain our audience, to reflect the diversity of the local and world community, and to provide a channel for individuals and groups, issues, and music that have been overlooked, suppressed or under-represented by other media.
