Board Member
Position Summary: Members of the Board of Directors serve as fiduciaries and strategic leaders of Pet Resource Center of Kansas City (PRCKC). The Board is responsible for ensuring the organization’s long-term sustainability, mission alignment, and financial health.
Board Members provide governance, oversight, and strategic direction—with responsibility for day-to-day operations resting with the Executive Director and staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Governance & Fiduciary Oversight

Uphold PRCKC’s mission, vision, and values
-
Ensure legal, ethical, and financial integrity of the organization
-
Review and approve organizational policies, budgets, and major initiatives
-
Monitor financial performance and ensure responsible stewardship of resources
-
Maintain confidentiality and act in the best interest of the organization
2. Strategic Leadership
-
Participate in the development and approval of long-term strategic plans
-
Provide insight, expertise, and high-level guidance on organizational direction
-
Evaluate progress toward strategic goals and adjust as needed
-
Anticipate future challenges and opportunities to ensure sustainability
3. Executive Director Support & Accountability
-
Hire, support, and conduct an annual evaluation of the Executive Director
-
Serve as a thought partner and advisor to the Executive Director
-
Respect and maintain clear boundaries between governance and operations
-
Avoid direct involvement in staff management or day-to-day decision-making
4. Financial Stewardship & Fundraising
-
Approve annual budget and monitor financial health
-
Make a personally meaningful annual financial contribution
-
Actively support fundraising efforts through:

Donor introductions and relationship-building
-
Event participation and sponsorship support
-
Advocacy and ambassadorial outreach
-
5. Ambassadorship & Community Engagement
-
Serve as an ambassador for PRCKC in the community
-
Promote the organization’s mission, programs, and impact
-
Leverage networks to increase visibility, partnerships, and resources
Board Member Expectations
-
Attend and actively participate in all board meetings (typically once a month)
-
Serve on at least one committee or working group
-
Come prepared, having reviewed all materials in advance
-
Engage in respectful, collaborative, and solutions-oriented dialogue
-
Support and uphold board decisions once made
-
Maintain appropriate governance boundaries (no operational interference)
Term & Commitment
-
Members are committed to a minimum of one-year term and are eligible for re-election annually at the end of each term.

Estimated Time Commitment: 5–10 hours per month
Key Distinction: Governance vs. Operations
Board Members focus on the “what” and “why” (mission, strategy, oversight), while staff are responsible for the “how” and “day-to-day execution.”

Beyond the support of animal welfare and PRCKC’s mission, qualifications include a minimum of ten (10) years professional and leadership experience.
