Accounting Manager

Job Title: Accounting Manager
Reports to: Chief Operating Officer
Type: Full-time, Exempt
 
Position Overview:
This position plays a key role in managing the financial operations of Ronald McDonald House Kansas City to ensure compliance, accuracy, and alignment with nonprofit financial regulations and policies.  This position is responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting activities, financial reporting, budgeting, audits, and maintaining the integrity of the financial systems.  This position supports the mission of the charity by ensuring the effective use of resources and promoting financial transparency.
 
Essential Job Functions/Key Responsibilities:
 
Accounts Payable & Purchasing Card Administration

  • Oversee full accounts payable cycle including invoice entry, coding, review, approvals, and payments, utilizing Financial Edge NXT workflow technology.
  • Maintain vendor records, W-9 documentation, and 1099 tracking.
  • Serve as purchasing card administrator to manage completion of approval workflows and monthly transaction posting
 
Deposits & Cash Receipts
  • Process and record deposit batches in coordination with the Donor Data team.
  • Reconcile donor system revenue to general ledger.
  • Ensure accurate recording of restricted gifts and grant revenue.
 
General Ledger & Month-End Close
  • Lead monthly and year-end close process, including journal entries and reconciliations
  • Maintain accuracy of the general ledger and chart of accounts.
  • Ensure proper classification of restricted and unrestricted net assets.
Financial Reporting
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Provide budget-to-actual analysis with variance explanations.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of grant and/or specific-project financial reports to funders.
 
Budgeting & Forecasting
  • Collaborate with the COO and assist in developing annual charity budget.
  • Provide regular budget versus actual analysis, with variance reporting and explanations.
  • Support COO in long-term financial planning and forecasting.
 
Audit and Compliance
  • Coordinate and manage annual external audits, ensuring timely responses to audit requests.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, laws and regulations (e.g. IRS, FASB).
  • Maintain internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure compliance with grant and contract requirements.
 
Team Leadership and Development
  • Supervise and mentor one full-time Billing Specialist (Medicaid) and temporary staff, as needed.
  • Provide guidance on accounting practices and professional development.
  • Foster an environment of continuous improvement by streamlining processes and enhancing financial systems.
 
Technology and Systems:
  • Ensure the integrity of accounting software systems and data.
  • Identify opportunities to improve and/or replace financial systems and processes for greater efficiency.
 
 
Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • CPA preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience (non-profit strongly preferred)
  • Preferred 3 years of supervisory experience
 
Skills and Competencies
  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial regulations
  • Proficiency with accounting software (Blackbaud FE NXT preferred) and MS Office, especially Excel.
  • Familiarity with donor management software (Virtuous preferred)
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly and effectively to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Independent judgement is required to plan, prioritize, and organize a diversified workload.

Job Type: Full Time

Salary Range: $75,000 - 99,999
