Senior Accountant
Mother's Refuge is hiring a Senior Accountant!

Mother’s Refuge is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing shelter, support, and resources for pregnant and parenting young mothers and their babies. We are seeking a skilled, detail-oriented, and mission-minded Senior Accountant.
Position Summary
The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting functions of Mother’s Refuge while also providing higher-level financial oversight, reporting, budgeting support, and internal controls.
This position requires strong accounting knowledge, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to produce accurate financial reports for leadership, grants, audits, and organizational planning.
The ideal candidate will have an accounting degree and strong accounting experience. Nonprofit accounting experience, QuickBooks Online experience, and CPA designation are preferred but not required. Experience with Bloomerang or another nonprofit CRM/donor database is a plus.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee all accounts payable functions, including vendor bills, employee expense reports, check preparation, documentation, approvals, and audit files.
- Supervise the Accounts Receivable Specialist and provide oversight of donation processing, receipts, deposits, donor records, and revenue reconciliation.
- Maintain accurate financial records, including general ledger entries, reconciliations, grant tracking, deposits, expenses, and journal entries.
- Prepare and pull financial reports, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, budget-to-actual reports, cash flow reports, grant reports, and other reports requested by leadership.
- Assist with organizational budgeting, budget monitoring, forecasting, and financial planning.
- Support grant applications and grant reporting by preparing financial documents, tracking restricted funds, and ensuring expenses are properly allocated.
- Oversee monthly bank and savings account reconciliations and ensure all accounts are accurate and current.
- Manage tax credit documentation, donor records, and related financial files as needed.
- Coordinate with leadership, auditors, and outside accounting professionals during audits, reviews, and financial reporting processes.
- Help strengthen internal controls, accounting procedures, documentation practices, and financial workflows.
- Support accurate coordination between accounting systems and Bloomerang, including reconciliation of donations, donor records, and financial data.
- Maintain organized records for audit readiness, grant compliance, and internal reporting.
- Provide financial information and reports to staff and leadership as needed.
- Perform other finance, administrative, and mission-support tasks as assigned.
Qualifications Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Strong working knowledge of accounting principles, general ledger activity, reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, and financial reporting.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
- Ability to prepare, review, and explain financial reports.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to learn and work within accounting software and financial systems.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial and donor information with integrity.
- Ability to work in a professional office setting and collaborate with leadership and staff.
- Must pass required background checks and meet organizational employment requirements.
Preferred
- Experience using QuickBooks Online.
- CPA designation or CPA candidate.
- Nonprofit accounting experience.
- Experience with grant accounting, restricted funds, and audit preparation.
- Experience using a CRM/donor management system.
- Experience supervising accounting, finance, or administrative staff.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a dependable and experienced accounting professional who can move beyond basic bookkeeping and provide strong financial oversight. This person should be comfortable managing financial systems, preparing reports, supporting budgets, maintaining compliance, and helping leadership make informed financial decisions.
They should also be mission-driven, ethical, discreet, and supportive of the work Mother’s Refuge does with young mothers and children.
Schedule
This is a full-time position. Standard office hours are expected, with occasional flexibility needed for meetings, deadlines, audits, special events, or organizational needs.
