Senior Accountant, Finance
The Senior Accountant is a seasoned accounting professional who thrives in both analytical work and relationship-driven environments. This position is responsible for financial accounting and reporting related to donor funds, supporting and related organizations of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation | Greater Horizons, and private foundations. This full-time exempt, salaried role reports to the Director, Controller’s Office, works in Kansas City, and requires regular office presence for meetings, training, and presentations. After a successful training period, this role can work a hybrid schedule.
The role manages all financial data supporting these relationships, including accounting, financial reporting, and compliance, and plays a key part in preparing tax returns and other required filings. In addition to core accounting functions - such as monthly close and account reconciliation - the position collaborates closely with internal teams and regularly presents financials to Boards and donors. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, a passion for clear communication, and the ability to build trust with stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities

Financial Relationship Management: Serve as the primary financial contact for supporting and related organizations, ensuring the accurate and timely delivery of financial data.

Financial Statement Preparation: Prepare and distribute periodic financial statements for supporting organizations, funds, and private foundations.

Tax Filing Coordination: Prepare 990 work papers and coordinate with relevant parties to ensure timely and accurate tax filings.

Board Reporting & Cash Management: Attend board meetings and present financial reports in a clear and engaging manner. Oversee the reconciliation of supporting organization cash accounts and assist with cash flow management.

Data Monitoring: Monitor key data points - including contributions, grants, and administrative fees - to ensure proper and timely recording.

Monthly Close & System Accuracy: Support the monthly close process and maintain accuracy across financial systems.

Donor Communication: Respond to donor inquiries regarding financial reports and transactions with professionalism and clarity.

Compliance Support: Assist the tax accountant with filings and compliance activities.

Process Improvement: Identify and provide support for process improvements as needed.
Requirements

Education & Credentials: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, data analytics, or a related field is required. CPA certification is preferred.

Financial and Business Acumen: Strong understanding of financial and accounting principles, with demonstrated business acumen and strategic thinking. Deep understanding of accounting principles and best practices and their application to nonprofit operations.

Technical Proficiency: Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel (including Power Query, pivot tables, and formulas) and ability to learn new software quickly.

Communication Skills: Skilled in presenting financial concepts (verbally and in writing) to technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leadership and cross-functional teams.

Instructional Interpretation: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret a variety of instructions and procedures. Comfortable navigating complex technical documentation and abstract variables and exhibit strong problem-solving skills and draw valid conclusions.

Operational Agility: Ability to operate in a highly collaborative environment, while able to work independently and be self-motivated. Respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints, work well under pressure, and identify/resolve issues quickly.

Transportation: Possesses a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, and maintains a clean driving record. Demonstrates the ability to drive safely, follow GPS/map instructions accurately, and ensure access to reliable transportation for work-related travel and engagements.

Office & Computer Work: Ability to work regularly at a computer terminal in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
