Community Outreach Coordinator

Hourly rate: $20.00
Spanish-speaking differential available; additional $1.00 per hour for employees who demonstrate and maintain Spanish language proficiency and are willing to use this skill for Wayside Waifs' business purposes.


As Kansas City’s largest and most comprehensive no kill pet adoption campus, Wayside Waifs prepares pets and people for the bond of their lives. More than 40,000 pets and people are served annually through pet adoptions, youth education, canine training programs, and community outreach. Wayside is a private nonprofit 501(c)(3) charity with regional and national reach. It is supported entirely by private donations and grants. POSITION SUMMARY 

The Community Outreach Coordinator is a newly established role in response to Wayside Waifs’ Strategic Plan and recent Community Needs Assessment. This role supports Wayside’s growing community outreach programs, including public vaccination clinics, TNR, pet food pantry, and spay and neuter services, serving both owned pets and the people that love them. 

  PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES  
  1. Implement the growing Community Outreach Program, which may include TNR programs, community vaccine clinics, spay/neuter events, street volunteer teams, pet food pantry, and food/supply distribution events, among others. 
  2. Assist with the process to gather and assess data related to community needs, priorities, feasibility, and opportunities as needed.  
  3. Collaborate with various community organizations, animal welfare organizations, social service organizations, civic leaders, and other stakeholders. 
  4. Assist with scheduling and implementation of Community Outreach Events. 
  5. Serve as event lead or co-lead, including set up and tear down, volunteer training, and point of contact for clients at Community Outreach Events. 
  6. Endorse and support the use of volunteers in all areas of work being performed. 
  7. Promote Wayside’s mission, goals, and objectives. 

PRIMARY TASKS & DUTIES 

  • Collaborate with other departments as appropriate to implement regularly scheduled community outreach events. 
  • Pick up and deliver donations and resources from and to community partners. 
  • Track and report necessary data to measure progress and success of all outreach initiatives. 
  • Represent Wayside Waifs at community events, including information fairs and resource events.  
  • Assist in the recruitment, training, and management of Community Outreach Volunteers and communicate additional volunteer needs with the Community Outreach Manager. 
  • Promote the program’s availability in the community. 
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with community partners to provide resources for pets and people. 
  • Engage directly with community members seeking assistance and/or participation in programs in a manner that builds trust and respect.  
  • Connect community members with additional community resources as needed. 
  • Proactively identify and communicate meaningful stories of impact to the Donor Relations Department to support donor engagement and mission-driven storytelling efforts.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills. 
  • Enthusiasm for building relationships and connecting with community members. 
  • Non-judgmental attitude and open mindedness, even in difficult situations. 
  • High level of organization and ability to manage many different components of the Community Outreach program: scheduling, customer service, resource management. 
  • Ability to recruit, develop, train and direct a high performing team of volunteers. 
  • Comfortability interacting with dogs and cats to be able to fill in and support where necessary at community events. 

Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS 

Education/Experience

  • High School Degree or higher 
  • 2+ years of outreach programming experience, community-based programming, or similar work-related job experience
  • Experience working with diverse communities 
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to apply common sense and problem-solving skills  
  • Ability to recruit, screen and train volunteer instructors  
  • Spanish speaking preferred
  • Animal handling and/or Vet Assistant experience (or willingness to learn) preferred 
  • Computer skills, which include basic knowledge of Microsoft office products 

Working Environment   

  • Both office and outdoor settings 
  • Must have valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and be willing to drive Wayside Waifs’ vehicles
  • Willing to travel to area locations in year-round weather conditions 
  • Ability to use computer, telephone, copy machines, media equipment
  • May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, noise level is moderate to high, frequently working with and exposed to a variety of animals
