The Role: Kanbe’s Markets is looking for a bold, detail-oriented thinker for Director of Philanthropy that will be the “hands-on” executor of philanthropic efforts for the organization. The Director of Philanthropy will help develop and lead donor-related strategies and initiatives at Kanbe’s Markets. Working closely in partnership with the Founder/CEO and the other leaders at Kanbe’s Markets, the Director of Philanthropy will lead the efforts to meet annual fundraising goals in the areas of individual giving, corporate support and event fundraising, totaling approximately $700,000 per year. The Director of Philanthropy will also work with Kanbe’s leaders and external consultants to execute a fundraising campaign to fuel organizational growth over the next two years. Through this hire, Kanbe’s Markets will enhance its overall approach to fundraising and build its development team.
 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Fundraising Planning & Strategy
  • Work closely with Leadership to assess and set development goals and strategies that align with the organization’s current needs and future growth plans; lead the execution of all fundraising strategies in a timely and efficient manner.
B. Corporate Funding Sources
  • Maintain current corporate partners by implementing impactful donor stewardship activities.
  • Identify prospective new corporate opportunities and lead the process to cultivate relationships with these prospects, including managing the full lifecycle of the donor relationship.
C. Individual Giving
  • Steward and grow Kanbe’s monthly giving program – Grassroots Givers.
  • Create and implement a major giving program focused on maintaining current major donors and significantly growing the number of individual donors giving at the major giving level.
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with prospective new individual donors, including developing outreach strategies, participating in donor meetings and coordinating all follow up.
D. Growth Campaign
  • Partnering with external consultants, facilitate a robust expansion campaign designed to meet annual Growth Campaign fundraising targets.
  • Help establish the Growth Campaign Committee of volunteer leaders and serve as staff lead for Committee meetings.
  • Create and implement stewardship plan for existing Growth Campaign donors and develop and execute strategies to inspire new Growth Campaign gifts.
  • Plan Growth Campaign-specific special events, as needed.
E. Events
  • Design, execute, and continually improve fundraising events that align to the mission of the organization, build awareness, and grow attendees into champions and donors. Current fundraising events include: Ugly Dinners (6 per year), Grassroots Givers-focused events and various one-off collaborations and give backs.
  • Represent Kanbe’s at events and/or meetings to grow community awareness of Kanbe’s mission and identify potential new donors to the organization.
F. Data Management/Fundraising Systems
  • Oversee fundraising operations. Manage the staff member responsible for CRM, including donor records, gift processing, gift acknowledgement and generating reports to track donor giving and improve the donor experience.
G. Volunteer Management (donor facing, not food sorting)
  • Serve as the staff liaison to the Marketing Committee and the Development Committee. Lead Committee meetings, provide timely follow up on relevant topics and inspire the Committee members to leverage their skills for the betterment of Kanbe’s Markets.

QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • 4-6 years of experience in development with a track record of success.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of fundraising strategies and funding sources, including campaigns, major donors, corporate solicitation, and monthly giving.
  • Proven experience identifying, cultivating and soliciting donor gifts required.
  • Strong background in CRM management and knowledge of fundraising best practices.
  • A passion for Kanbe’s mission, social justice, food equity or health and nutrition.
  • Must reside in the Kansas City area.

Compensation: Salary range for the Director of Philanthropy is $70,000-$80,000 and will be commensurate with experience.

Benefits: Full time team members are eligible for medical, dental and vision insurance at the time of hire. Time Away from Work: Kanbe’s Markets is a full time ‘in person’ operation at our warehouse in Kansas City, Missouri. Kanbe’s employees are generally permitted one work-from-home day every other week. In addition to company holidays, this full-time position is eligible for fourteen days of paid vacation annually.


Impact Plan: 

Within 1 month, you’ll:
  • Understand organizational mission, vision, three-year growth plan and annual goals
  • Understand organizational structure including departments and roles and responsibilities
  • Be acquainted with gift making processes and systems
  • Be independently soliciting, tracking and receipting gifts
Within 3 months, you’ll:
  • Be managing a portfolio of donors
  • Providing scheduled reports
  • Foster trust and rapport with Kanbe’s Staff
  • Be representing Kanbe’s at events and speaking on the organization’s behalf
  • Have full ownership of philanthropic goals and strategies

Salary Range: $50,000 - 74,999,$75,000 - 99,999
