Veterans Community Project (VCP) Overview
Founded in 2016 in Kansas City, MO, VCP is dedicated to supporting every man and woman who took the oath to defend our nation. The greatest barrier to ending Veteran homelessness is the revolving door of unstable housing and the frustrating maze Veterans must navigate to get basic support. We believe that to be an effective program, the first step is to connect Veterans and the community. VCP created an innovative homeless housing program and outreach assistance that provides inclusive services to aid Veterans in re-claiming control over their lives.?
The Team
We, the team members and co-founders of VCP, are connectors, feelers, and doers on a mission to help our kin, our kind. We move with swift, bold action, driven by our mission. We believe in collaboration, community, compassion, and above all, serving Veterans with dignity and respect.
The Role
Are you a storyteller who excels at driving results and making an impact? Do you thrive on building messages that cultivate strong relationships and inspire action? Do you enjoy digging into data to see how communications are performing and where they can improve? If you have a background in nonprofit communications and understand how to engage donors through thoughtful, strategic marketing—this role might be for you.
Veterans Community Project is seeking a Donor Communications Manager to lead the development and execution of donor-focused messaging across multiple channels, including email, SMS, direct mail, print materials, stewardship campaigns, and more. You’ll play a key role in bringing our mission to life through engaging, relationship-driven communications that deepen donor engagement in our mission.
You’ll also analyze campaign performance, generate reports, and lead post-campaign reviews to identify what’s working, where we can improve, and how we continue deepening our donor relationships over time.
The ideal candidate brings a deep commitment to VCP's mission, a strong grasp of donor-centric messaging, a data-informed market mindset, and a deadline-driven approach to delivering timely communications. You’ll be part of a collaborative, mission-driven team dedicated to fixing Veteran homelessness and telling the powerful stories of the lives we impact together.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Campaign Execution: Build, test, deploy, and manage integrated donor marketing communications (email/SMS) using Virtuous CRM.
- Marketing Automation: Implement marketing automation strategies and optimize CRM platform features to improve communications performance and increase audience engagement.
- Communications Best Practices: Research nonprofit marketing trends, advise teams on donor communication best practices, and identify underutilized Virtuous features to provide recommendations that improve campaign effectiveness, efficiency, and alignment with VCP’s voice and goals.
- Template Development and Brand Consistency: Maintain (and evolve) modern, on-brand email and SMS templates to ensure all donor-facing materials align with VCP’s visual and messaging standards.
- Project Management and Scheduling: Own the communications schedule, ensuring all messages are built, versioned, proofed, documented, and delivered accurately and on time through clear coordination with your team and all stakeholders.
- Performance and Reporting: Analyze campaign performance and deliver reports to support strategic decision-making.
- Donor Insights and Surveys: Design and implement a donor survey program to gather insights and inform engagement strategies inside campaigns and journeys.
- Platform and Integration Oversight: Manage online fundraising platforms and oversee Zapier integrations to streamline marketing automation, helping the team work smarter, not harder.
- Copywriting and Messaging Support: Write audience-focused copy that aligns with project goals and reflects VCP’s brand voice across a range of materials.
- Documentation and Training: Help develop SOPs, templates, and training resources to support consistent communication practices across VCP sites.
Competencies and Areas of Expertise:
- Passion for VCP’s Mission: You bring a deep commitment to the mission of VCP and the Veterans we serve.

- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to develop and deliver compelling messages that align with VCP’s mission. Must be able to handle sensitive and confidential issues with discretion.
- Goal-Oriented: Self-motivated with a strong drive to set, attain, and surpass goals, with minimal supervision.
- Confidentiality: A strong commitment to maintaining the confidentiality of information, records, and materials.
