Resource and Development Director

POSITION TITLE – Resource and Development Director

REPORTS TO – President/CEO

STATUS - Full-time, Salary Exempt 

SALARY RANGE - $70,000-85,000
 

The resource and development director will be an integral part of the Sunflower House leadership team. Serves as the director for the Sunflower House individual donors, major gifts, private foundation and corporate grants, annual fund and department development and supervision. Manages the:  Development and Communications Manager, Development Coordinator and Finance/Grant Manager. Responsible for overseeing the planning and execution of the Sunflower House Golf Classic, Valentine Gala and Sunflower Social. 

This is a full-time (37.50 hours per week) position, salary exempt, reporting to the President/CEO.  The salary range is $70,000-$85,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Individual Donor, Corporate Donor and Major Gifts Cultivation and Solicitation

  • Develop and implement strategies for individual donor, major gifts cultivation and solicitation

    • Determining ongoing relationships with prospective and existing donors.

    • Recommending specific purpose and gift level.

    • Identifying those to be involved in cultivation and subsequent solicitation.

    • Assuring solicitations are carried out.

  • Manage relationships with 50-75 prospective donors and participate in all aspects of the gift cycle.

    • Initiate contacts with potential major gifts donors.

    • Develop appropriate cultivation strategies, including coordinating meetings with the President/CEO, board and volunteers.

    • Move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure.

    • Make solicitations when appropriate or identify and work with others to make the ask.

    • Provide stewardship of current and past donors to Sunflower House through regular communication, engagement and recognition.

  • Present donors, as appropriate, with planned giving opportunities. 

  • Work with the Board of Directors committees to identify and develop plans to cultivate individual and corporate donors.  

  • Implement a development plan that includes the following:  coordinate and participate in agency tours, make follow up calls to attendees, record their feedback, and keep appropriate records tracking contact information and ongoing participation.  

  • Work with the development team to recruit ambassadors or table captains for annual ask events. 

Annual Fund

  • Work with the Development Team, Sunflower House Leadership Team, and Board Committees to create and submit a fund development plan annually.

  • Responsible for the delegation, oversight and success of the current fundraising activities:  Gala, Tours and Ask Event, Corporate and Foundation support, Events, Individual giving, United Way Funding and outreach, matching gift opportunities, and third party events. 

Grants Management:

  • Maintain a tracking system that contains deadlines for all grant submissions, including proposals and reports.  Submit timely grant reports as required by private funders.

  • Manage and track grant expenditures with accounting personnel and monitor restrictive funds.

  • Collaborate with relevant program staff to keep them apprised of current grant requirements.

  • Work with Grants and Finance Manager on developing a grant cultivation strategy.

Department Management and Supervision of staff

  • Serves as a supervisor and coach to develop staff to ensure that all funding sources, community relations, communication and volunteer programs and activities are consistent with the overall mission, vision and values.

  • Provide regular team meetings.  

  • Provide individual supervision consisting of guidance, coaching, support, and growth opportunities that assist staff in reaching the goals for their roles.

  • Provide training and feedback.

  • Complete Annual Performance Evaluations for staff.

  • Prepares and implements annual strategies to meet the strategic plan goals related to resource development, volunteers, and communications.

  • Create and maintain appropriate record keeping systems for tracking donor participation and stewardship.  

  • Implement an effective donor acknowledgement plan that is both timely and results in a strong sense of appreciation to both individuals and corporations.

Other Expectations: 

  • Must be able to articulate the mission of Sunflower House through public speaking.

  • Adheres to the highest ethical standards, demonstrating perseverance, and sensitivity to the needs and interests of donors.

  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality for agency clients and donors, as well as overall agency finances, personnel and operations.

  • Remain current on fundraising best practices, marketing and public relations, special events management, volunteer recruitment and retention, and grants management procedures being utilized in the nonprofit sector.

  • Remain abreast of issues and trends related to child abuse and trauma.

  • Engage in learning opportunities related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging.

  • Attend agency functions including special events, board and committee meetings, leadership meetings and external community networking events.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including proofreading and editing. 

  • Ability to build long-term relationships on behalf of Sunflower House.

  • Problem-solver and self-starter; ability to work well independently and with a team.

  • Must demonstrate professional appearance, pleasant telephone and interpersonal skills.

  • Respectful of cultural differences and demonstrate appropriate boundaries and confidentiality with all constituents.

  • Flexible scheduling as some evening and weekend hours will be required.

  • Ability to handle multiple projects with confidence and ease. 

  • Other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications, fundraising, non-profit management, or related field preferred but not required. 

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, including annual development planning and proven success in major gifts solicitation.

  • Ability to accomplish and advance fund development, communications and marketing goals.

  • Must have supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to hire, manage, and mentor staff.

  • Proven experience in the preparation and monitoring of budgets and financial projections.

  • Certified Fundraising Executive certification or similar accreditation.

  • Work must be accurate, timely, and demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of all facets of fundraising.

  • Excellent communication, writing, and proofreading skills are required. 

  • Skilled at using Microsoft Office, Google, PowerPoint, and Excel is required.

  • Experience with OneCause, DonorPerfect or other fundraising platforms and databases is preferred but not required; training will be provided.

  • Experience with Wordpress, CANVA, Constant Contact, Adobe or other graphic design platforms/software highly preferred. 

Other Requirements

  • Lift 25 pounds routinely. 

  • Bend, sit, and stoop on a regular basis. 

  • Work in an often-stressful environment, requiring quick thinking in difficult situations.

  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel in and around the region. 

  • Ability to effectively use all tools, devices, equipment, computer systems required to fulfill essential functions of the position. 

  • Being bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
