Custodian

Reports to:  Venue Maintenance Manager
Member of: Guest Experience Team

Supervises: N/A
Classification:  Full-Time/Non-Exempt | Pay Grade/Salary Range: 1/$15-$19.00 per hour

Starlight is Kansas City’s oldest and largest outdoor performing arts organization, stewarding a $20M+ annual budget and a year-round staff of 45+ full-time employees alongside hundreds of seasonal team members and volunteers. As a civic treasure and cultural destination, Starlight presents Broadway musicals, concerts, special events and community programming that collectively reach hundreds of thousands of guests each year through more than 100 events annually.

The custodian ensures the cleanliness, upkeep, and readiness, including set-up and tear-down, of common areas and event spaces. This position works independently under general direction and requires strong attention to detail, time management skills, and the ability to balance multiple routine and ongoing tasks.
 
Required Accountabilities + Deliverables

  • Perform routine custodial and cleaning duties using established methods, materials, and equipment to maintain clean, safe, and orderly facilities.
  • Clean and maintain all assigned areas, including common areas, restrooms, meeting rooms, dressing rooms, administrative spaces, elevators, entranceways, stairwells, and event spaces.
  • Conduct floor care activities such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and waxing in accordance with cleaning schedules and procedures.
  • Empty trash and recycling receptacles regularly and ensure proper disposal of waste materials.
  • Perform detail cleaning tasks, including dusting, window cleaning, surface wiping, spill and fluid cleanup, and spot cleaning as needed.
  • Assist with event setup and teardown, including arranging chairs, tables, and equipment, and restoring spaces following events.
  • Set up, monitor, clean, and break down areas used for meetings, rehearsals, and special events.
  • Safely operate custodial equipment such as floor scrubbers, pressure washers, and other cleaning tools.
  • Maintain custodial equipment and supplies, including monitoring inventory, ordering supplies as directed, and reporting equipment maintenance or repair needs.
  • Perform exterior support duties as assigned, including litter control and snow and ice removal through sweeping and shoveling.
  • Work independently and as part of a team, following assigned schedules, cleaning routines, and safety procedures.
  • Assist with daily task assignments and provide feedback on cleaning needs or facility issues observed during work.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills + Abilities
  • Exhibit strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple ongoing projects.
  • Work independently and as part of a team while maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Comfortable with possible exposure to bodily fluids.
Preferred Education and/or Work Experience
  • High school diploma or three years of custodial/housekeeping experience.
  • Experience in venue operation is preferred.
  • Knowledge of cleaning standards, such as equipment, chemicals, etc. as well as OSHA and EPA standards.
 
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment at a minimum of 30 lbs.
  • Ability to bend, squat, reach, stretch, walk, stand, sit, grasp, and twist repeatedly and/or for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • This role is an indoor and outdoor job with a varying work week schedule of 40+ hours per week but these hours may vary depending on weather, events, holidays, and other factors.
