Finance Supervisor

RESPONSIBILITIES: 
Reporting to the Director of Financial Reporting and working collaboratively with other Foundation staff, this position will be responsible for providing direction and management of the accounts payable and tax administration functions, including supervising two team members. The Finance Manager will also be responsible for overseeing tax compliance, managing related vendor relationships, and participating in annual audits.
 
Specific responsibilities include:
 
Tax Preparation
  • Ensure the Foundation adheres to tax requirements including overseeing the preparation of the 990PF, 990T, and UBIT, tax estimates, and related projections for the Foundation.
  • Provide support to external tax accountants and consultants for completion of Foundation annual tax return filings.
  • Manage and respond to federal and state tax notices and other tax-related correspondence.
  • Assist in providing research and guidance to associates on federal, state, local, and other tax issues concerning not-for-profit organizations.
  • Assist in managing the relationship with external tax accountants and consultants, handling inquiries and requests throughout the year.
 
Accounts Payable
  • Oversee and take ownership of the accounts payable (AP) function, prioritizing and directing the work of two specialists.
  • Serve as the point person for AP, ensure Foundation policies are upheld and evaluate and communicate exceptions.
  • Oversee daily work, review, and approve AP, field associate questions, and provide general managerial support and guidance.
  • Ensure payments occur in accordance with Foundation and affiliate policies.
  • Lead process improvement efforts including automation of manual processes, enhancing the financial reporting, identifying training opportunities, and recommending process updates.
  • Monitor monthly activity of payments to ensure key performance indicators (KPI) are followed.
  • Update and maintain documentation for the AP process, as well as make recommendations for improvements.
  • Serve as the primary contact for vendor relationships related to AP.
  • Review annual tax reporting of Form 1099 and Form 1042.
  • Provide onboarding for new associates by providing training on responsibilities and expectations of payment processing and the travel policy.
  • Participate in annual audits by preparing requested documentation and information to external auditor(s).
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
 
Education: Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration or related field or equivalent years of experience. A CPA (or other professional designation) is preferred.
 
Work Experience: Must have a professional track record of at least three years of accounting and tax experience, including general ledger accounting, accounts payable, and preparing/reviewing private equity tax returns.  At least one year of supervisory experience required.
 
Travel: This position may require occasional business travel.

  • Has exceptional organizational skills including the ability to meet or exceed expectations regarding deadlines and successfully managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Can change focus and shift priorities with short notice while maintaining accuracy and productivity.
  • Possesses excellent skills in math and technology including advanced spreadsheet experience, e.g., pivot tables, macros.
  • Possesses a passion for “doing what is right,” with unquestioned integrity, positive ethics, and values reflective of the Kauffman Foundation.

  • Has strong computer literacy skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and financial accounting applications. Workday experience preferred.
