Institutional Giving Manager

Job Title:          Institutional Giving Manager

Job Summary: The Manager of Institutional Giving is responsible for researching and writing foundation, government, corporate, and individual grant proposals; preparing reports and updates; and overseeing the grants calendar and monitoring new and upcoming foundation grants. This position is also responsible for managing a small portfolio of corporate prospects and sponsors. The Manager will be an effective project manager, responsible for communicating the Company’s message in a consistent, accurate, and persuasive manner. The Manager is a member of the development team and reports to the Chief Development Officer. This position also works closely with other development team members as well as other departments to gather key project information and budgets.

  • Create/participate in an environment that encourages donors to participate with the company through donations, volunteering, auxiliary support, or in-kind services
  • Maintain confidentiality of donors
  • Maintain and present a positive attitude with public, donors, and staff
 
Core Job Duties:

Prepare grant proposals, applications, and reports for current and potential funders
  • Responsible for writing grant proposals, updates, and reports, ensuring all documentation is accurate, complete and on time, as required by funders
  • Work with staff to acquire program and budgetary information needed for reports, and ensure staff are updated on progress
  • Work with management team to coordinate activities and responsibilities for completion, including project timelines and internal deadlines for completion
 
Update grant activity reports in database and file in a timely, comprehensive manner
  • Track timelines grant proposals and reporting through active maintenance of grants calendar
  • Update constituent records in database and maintain accurate and organized files
  • Prepare foundation, government, and corporate grant reports
 
Research current and prospective foundation, government, and corporate prospects
  • Keep abreast of industry trends and proactively strategize funding and program opportunities that will help grow the organization
  • Research prospective foundations, government agencies and corporations to determine grant opportunities, giving interests, and donor viability and communicate opportunities to appropriate colleagues
  • Become familiar with foundations, government agencies and corporations’ emphasis and key decision makers
 
Corporate solicitation and stewardship ($250+)
  • Work in collaboration with the Development Committee and the CDO to devise strategy to achieve annual corporate revenue goals
  • Research, identify and prioritize prospective corporate partners, including managing individual relationships with key corporate contacts
  • Ensure that corporate partners receive appropriate acknowledgements and benefits
  • Create and prepare solicitation materials, presentations, and related communications/marketing materials in collaboration with the CDO and Marketing/Communications staff
  • Responsible for the planning and implementation of all events related to corporate fundraising
 
Development Department Related Responsibilities
  • Assist CDO with managing Foundation, Federal, State and Local campaign budgets 
  • Edit collateral materials as requested

Essential Functions
Manage all aspects of the Company’s research and grant writing, proposal writing and general written development materials for general operating, education and capital campaigns and other collateral materials as needed. Required Competencies:
  • 1-2 years of demonstrated experience in writing and preparing foundation, government, and/or corporate grants
  • Excellent persuasive writing skills
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills with ability to manage complex deadlines and priorities
  • Base knowledge of opera, performing arts, classical music, arts education, and/or the Kansas City philanthropic landscape is highly desirable
  • Ability to collaborate with staff, professional colleagues, and supporters
  • Self-motivated and detail oriented
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Proficiency in Tessitura or another CRM database preferred
 
Work Environment: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role is performed sitting at a desk, and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets. While most work occurs in relation to a long-term plan, will be required to be flexible to changing priorities and additional projects that can require overtime and ability to manage short term deadlines.
 
Physical Demands:  A portion of the work is of a sedentary nature sitting at a desk, but filing and other duties are required. This will require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand, as necessary.
 
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position. The days and hours are Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm. Work may require attendance at performances and other Company events.
 
Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant professional experience
  • At least 1-2 years of direct experience in grant writing and project management in the nonprofit sector
